How vain are you?

ahhh, we shop vicariously through you, Selena....

Ah, the thrill of the hunt and then bagging a bargain! Wear it and enjoy in good health

WooHOO! This thread is back!
Still getting monthly pedicures. Not because I'm VAIN, but because I can't bend over that far!
After years of wearing Target T-shirts and Walmart stretch jeans (and uber-expensive Mephisto orthopedic sandals) I have to buy something to wear to a country club event.
For their 50th anniversary, our friends are renewing their vows in church in the afternoon, followed by cocktails, dinner, and dancing at the CC.
Any suggestions? I have til September... (And I don't think it will be a "glittery" event....)
-
I LOVE that kayb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
kay that is beautiful
-
kayb - that is gorgeous! Will you be my personal stylist?
Very elegant, yet not glittery. Long enough to hide my veiny legs without resorting to pants, could get away with wearing some fancy dress sandals. AND - cool enough if it's still hot here, yet arms covered for air conditioning.
THANK YOU!!!
(Have you ordered from this site before?)
-
Oh Blessings! I'm so excited for you. I would hate to be looking for a dress right now as well, but what a gorgeous outfit! Like you say, not pants, but with the length to cover all the wobbly bits. Would love to see a pic of you in it!
-
Thanks, barbe... just trying to figure out what size to order, having gained back most of the weight I lost a few years ago. I see that it's silk and linen, so I want to be able to sit down without feeling like a Jimmy Dean sausage link!
I am so bad at returning things I've ordered online... I usually wait too long, and end up giving things away or donating them. So I want to be sure I get the details right this time. I think it would make a nice pic, especially if DH wears his nice black suit.
Stay tuned...
-
What a beautiful idea, kayb! And a silk/linen blend would drape nicely and be cool.
Bandolino sling-back pumps with contrasting toe-cap: style is similar to the Chanel sling-back favoured by the Princess of Wales. I fell in love with the look; so classic and timeless, and goes with just about everything.
-
Love them. I love spectator pumps too.
-
Yikes! I just went to order that dress, after trying to searching their site of 5,000+ dresses (no, I didn't see them all..)
I checked the fabric: silk and linen.
I checked the sizes: "Large" gives massively big measurements.
Then I checked the reviews for the company (StyleWe) and they were awful... most called them a scam.
It's located in China, and they have numerous complaints about sizing issues (everything runs two sizes too small), quality (one lady ordered the exact same dress I want and it was clearly labeled 100% polyester), delivery (items were never sent, or were "lost", or just disappeared), time (some items took 30 days to arrive, negating the "30-day return policy"), return policy (fake tracking numbers are initially given out, then you must beg for a "code" before you send something back, and they don't give you one) and customer service (nonexistant.)
SO... as much as I adore the dress in the picture, I'm afraid to order it now. I just ordered a less-dressy dress from Nordstrom... free shipping, free returns, and their customer service is the best.
(But I STILL love that two-piece outfit, kayb! )
-
Blessings I think you did the right thing.. a friend of mine ordered a dress from a similar company in China and her dress turned out to be a shirt!
-
Thought this could be a fun thread to join. Loving those sling backs, SelenaWolf!
I am so vain that I took YSL golden lip gloss on a hike (a fabulous hot pink with white gold flakes in it) so I could apply prior to doing a selfie!!! I do have to say it looked fab with my pink cotton T. I still regularly wear hose under my clothes as think they look more polished. Not to mention that I forego blisters and have warm feet.
Timing is everything. I snagged a pair of Raf Simons wool leggings on eBay for $9.99 on Sunday, the day before he was announced the new artistic director for Calvin Klein. These are from his Jil Sander days. Can't wait for them to arrive.
I feed my taste for expensive clothing via resale and eBay. But to do eBay, you have to be brutally honest about your measurements.
I don't stint on skincare or cosmetics either. Brands are Clarins (skincare) and YSL and Chanel for foundation, eye makeup, and lipsticks. I work the specials and make sure I do the free makeovers to stay current.
As an aside, I do work in market research in addition to my nonprofit work. Few of the women we interviewed in focus groups have any idea what they spend on makeup and skincare. They remember department store purchases, but drug store purchases get mentally lumped in with "drug store stuff" so they don't think about the $20 or so they drop every time something catches their eye. I personally learned the hard way (again) a few years ago. I wanted a pink eyeshadow, and I bought it three times, the last time at Chanel where the color was perfect. I used it for years and tossed the others.
I sleep in sheets that are a cotton-silk blend. Just divine! I snagged them on sale, and fortunately got two sets, as don't think I could find them again.
Finally, a major milestone in treatment was when I could move back into my La Perla bras. My latest one is silk. Talk about the other side of wonderful! Now just to find some more divine flats as I want to walk around in style. Still searching for replacements to my older Ferragamos. - Claire

Agreed that you did the right thing Blessings, but can you post a pic of the Nordstrum dress?
-
I'm in much the same pickle as Blessings. Going shopping Friday (sales and tax free weekend double bonus) for a dress for an outdoor Botanic Garden wedding 1st week of October. October in North Texas is not really fall yet, can still be blazing hot at 5 pm wedding time. I'm thinking black/white also. May be the focus of every trip into town until I find something. Have plenty of "church" clothes but nothing wedding dressy. My other trouble is shape, short and wide to put it bluntly lol. And then the horror of finding shoes. Not a heels person at all. No idea if wedding is actually outside like on grass or in a venue there.
Yes please do post a picture Blessings.
-
Is it at the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens or at the Arboretum?
I think I would pass on heels-long walk from the car sometimes at both venues, plus if you are on grass your heels will be sinking, especially if it is muddy.
Tough week. You won't know if it is going to be 65 and raining or 95 and blazing. I remember I took the last week of October off one year because the weather is usually beautiful. It was 90 degrees every day:(

Claire... I always carry a lipstick in my sports bra when I go cycling. I'll go without eye make-up, but never without lipstick or a tinted balm.
I tend to shop out-of-season in order to get the best deals on my favourite designers. I'm on a Ralph Lauren kick right now; his jersey-knit dresses drape so beautifully and launder like an old rag. I like Brooks Brothers for shirts and suits (you can't beat their tailoring), and anything goes when it comes to finding something to wear for an evening gala. Then, I like to go 1940's retro. Women were so glamorous then, I just can't resist trying to emulate them.During my "down time", I'm a classic Levi's and boots girl or I like to go with a really witchy floor-length black dress.
-
This is the dress I ordered from Nordstrom. Thought the spandex would be forgiving, but I see now it has an attached underslip. Either the bold print will hide the bumpy bits, or I'll need to lose some more weight by mid-September! (I ordered the 16... too bad I didn't need it when I was a size 8...)

p.s. I'm still looking!!!
-
Good move to order from Nordstrom. Extremely chic, and just needs a hat to balance everything! And if it doesn't work out as you think it will, you can return it.
You might also need undergarments to streamline the look. I am sure they can help you out. - Claire
-
OOOoooh, very pretty Blessings!!! The pattern will hide a multitude of wobbly bits.
-
very nice dress... you will look wonderful
-
Claire - I see Spanx in my future....
Barbe - love it - my Nana used to say that such-and-such would hide a multitude of sins....(and she wasn't religious!)
Thanks, kayb... we'll see what happens when it arrives....
Thank you, Nancy!
-
What's funny is that now that Nordstrum ad shows up on other pages I'm surfing on the internet! "They" really do follow what we link to...
-
Lovely dress! A very good choice. Yes, Spanx - or something similar - are a staple of mine. I have a horror of VPL (visible panty line) and I simply cannot understand these young girls who will spent a FORTUNE on a dress, but wear their underwear too small so that their muffin-top is completely on display. I just keep hearing my grandmother's voice, "... good foundation garments are a woman's secret weapon..."
-
Ah, yes! There seems to be a lot of confusion these days about a muffin top being an "asset". I will admit that life was easier that way when trousers normally came up to the waist. Now relatively difficult to find, but for me a lot more comfortable.
That said, I do showcase my legs which look fab from cycling.
Oh gosh, Selena! I just had a vision of my grandmother's corsets. Not in this lifetime! One thing that has greatly improved from when I was a young girl is undergarments.
Off to do my crunches on my exercise ball so that I need fewer of them. Free weights just prior to dinner. Hope to get in a run as well.
Just remembered another of my "vanities". I normally wear YSL Paris....even when cycling, but the Eau de Toilette, not the Eau de Parfum.
Signing off now, as more work than time to get it done today.... - Claire
-
I adore corsets! Fell in love with them when I broke a couple of ribs about 20 years ago. The doctor wouldn't wrap them (I guess they don't do that any longer?) and I was in so much pain, my husband - who was the women's fashion business at the time - suggested a corset. I was desperate enough to try one and, oh my! The relief! Plus, with a really pretty one ('cause, of course, I bought pretty), I felt so ultra feminine. Today's lighter boning and no lacing means they are more comfortable than they used to be in my grandmother's day, but they still encourage perfect posture... which can only add to overall appearance.
Yes, I am REALLY vain.I'm a Chanel No. 5 girl who, occasionally, switches to Diorissmo. And, yes, I wear perfume (and lipstick) while cycling, as well.
-
Corset picture from 2 years ago....party at Oldschool Pinups. I have a print hanging in my bathroom where the décor approaches x-rated. - Claire
-
Corsets! I am a huge fan. Not the cheap fashion finds on EBay or costumey ones, but handmade creations (steel bones and laced), made by experienced corsetieres. Properly fitted and seasoned, they are quite comfortable and lovely well made pieces. I prefer a very curvy silhouette and my personal favorites come from Isabella Corsetry. Try this site for a wealth of information on corsetry. Lucy is an amazing, intelligent young woman who knows more about corsetry than anyone I've run across. She is also warm and friendly and always willing to answer questions.
-
I just go commando a lot, no panty lines, voila! Spanks drives me nuts
-
eBay success!!! 1) the Jil Sander stretch trousers/leggings fit....yippie!!!! and 2) I just snagged a La Perla bra which should look just fab underneath my sweaters!
Anyone who cycles goes commando regularly...cycling shorts/tights require it. But sad to report that my super fab silk thongs have bitten the dust. None on eBay so doubly sad. Not that most of these undies cover much more than going commando
I actually need cycling shorts a lot more than underwear as blow through them regularly. Unfortunately the ones that really do the job cost megabux. And I know exactly why they are the brand favored by the US cycling team
Anyway, I should feel extremely chic once the cold weather comes and I can rock the Jil Sanders. Hoping with my uber-cool Burberry belt. Something to really look forward to.
This is after I finish the cycling season....3 more big events. Which is of course, why I am able to rock Lycra and other leggings. - Claire
