I started with Lupron and another AI, Aromasin, premenopausal, not as a preventive, but as a treatment for my Stage IV cancer. (I happen to be on Femara now, but am post menopausal.)

When I started Lupron shots, I think I was like a lot of women who think of Lupron as "it shuts off my ovaries" and think of an oopherectomy as "that will help prevent a recurrence." I learned that the truth is actually a LOT more complex. Lupron is a fertility drug, when you STOP taking it, it sends your ovaries into hyperdrive. Lupron works by confusing your pituitary gland, which also regulates your body temperature. Getting Lupron shots meant not just hot flashes but cold flashes -- shivering cold while sitting in the hot sun. Ugh. I couldn't handle Lupron and an Aromatase Inhibitor. I had to stop after 6 months. It knocked my cancer back but the side effects were horrible. Some women can handle it, not me. I didn't want my ovaries removed -- go look in the Stage IV forums, see how many women list oopherectomy in their signature and STILL had a recurrence. Estrogen is everywhere, not just your ovaries.

FWIW, because of the side effects of AIs such as bone density loss, I think Tamox is a much easier route to prevent recurrence. AI side effects are fierce. Quality of life should matter to anyone who has suffered through cancer treatment. Stronger treatment doesn't necessarily mean more successful treatment when it comes to breast cancer.
