was a New Year's Eve party in 1999. We kept playing that prince song : tonight I am gonna party like 1999. At midnight they had a best breast contest and it got crazier after that. NO I didn't participate either as a participant or judge in the contest.

A male friend of mine threw a party for his last hurrah as a single man. This was over 20 years ago when we were in our mid 20s. Suits and ties were required for the men, and cocktail dresses for the women. My girlfriends and I were expecting a pretty fancy shindig based on the dress code. Well, we get there and there's a keg and some chips and dip on the table. Standard 20 something party. Now this wouldn't have been so bad, but the fact that everyone is dressed up made the environment weird and stiff.

Something fun I have planned for the weekend..

When I was growing up (in a small town), an old bachelor farmer and a retired spinster school teacher (she was one of those teachers who devoted their lives to their students) fell in love (much to the surprise of everyone...themselves most of all!). They decided to marry and have a large but simple wedding. They invited everyone in town and the church was full (many former students came back especially for their favorite teacher). Even though I was young, I still remember the wedding (the bride wore a lilac street length dress and her sister, her only attendant wore a mint green dress in the same style) and the warmth and absolute delight that filled the room.

When I heard .........was getting married, I knew it would NOT last because.......

    Nice story, Ruth!

Well gosh. I could pretty much say that about every celebrity couple, but I'll go with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Oh wait.... They're still together... for now.

One of my dearest friends, because her husband was two years younger than her, and 24 when they were married. I thought for sure it wouldn't last, because he never really sowed any oats. 22 years and two beautiful daughters later, they are still going strong.

A situation I thought I was absolutely right about, but was wrong...

was planting annuals under a bird feeder. This time of year we have sparrows. They're fun to watch but are messy eaters that prefer sunflower seeds and pick them out, spilling other seeds to the ground. There's a lush bed of millet growing under the feeder and if I don't keep up on the weeding, I can't see my petunias. A bird-loving co-worker says the juncos like millet but they're here in the winter.

Not to put too much trust in the weather report. There have been quite a fewtimes when I'm looking at the Weather Channel app, and precipitation is 0%, and it's raining outside.BUT I really learned this the hard way a few days ago when I checked the weather before my usual a.m. hike and saw that there was only a 15% chance of rain in the morning. There were some pretty mean looking clouds, but I decided to go anyway (only 15% chance of rain!). Well, it starts drizzling at the start of my trail, but I keep going thinking it'll stop because.....15%. When I heard thunder, I decided to turn around, and that's when it started pouring. Yep, learned that one the hard way.

It was darkn and before cels - so no calling a friend. I had also just moved to a new state and knew very few people to ask for help. So I walked like 5 miles in the dark to the friends houses def was scared. Hate learning my lessons the hard way

Fall is my favorite season, too. I love the smells that I associate with autumn, which for me are wet grass mixed with the aroma of burning wood. The colors of the leaves. I love Halloween and passing out candy to the neighborhood kids. I live in southern CA, but grew up in Ohio, and even though I don't experience the bitter cold, and I'm fortunate to live near the ocean, I miss having four consistent seasons. I spend a lot of time in OH with my dad, so I've experienced a good mid west Autumn for the past four years. I look forward to hiking during the fall this year. The metro park near my dad is absolutely beautiful

I was the "paper girl." My mom and I lived in an apartment. The paper truck guy would drop off the KC Star about 5:30 am and I would walk around and put them in front of the doors of the appropriate apartments. Fortunately we only had 2 story buildings. Sundays were challenging though. Still remember being surprised when a few people gave me little Christmas gifts and one gave me a tip! It was a real job and shows up on my Social Security payments list.

I worked for a public relations firm right out of college. I only worked there for six weeks, but it felt like six years. My work day started at 7 a.m and didn't end until around 11 p.m. And I still had work to do once I got home, so I wouldn't get to bed until around 2 in the morning. I get that you pay your dues when you're young, but on top of it my boss (the owner of the firm) was a cheap, maniacal, abusive a$$ hole.

at this point, mainly memories. As a former teacher, preparing for the school year was a big deal. Getting my own kids ready for school was fun. Then, I was very involved in getting grandkids ready. I have a weird thing about enjoying buying school supplies. I still stop in that section at Target and look at notebooks, pens, etc. Don't have any grandkids locally young enough to help locally. So, miss that transition period.
