Travel Funding for Clinical Trials?

Options

Hi,

I am accepted into a clinical trial in California that will require me to travel from my home, in Madison, WI, out to LA eight times in the next two years. Is anyone aware of any foundations or other outfits that offer grants or other assistance for travel to participate in clinical trials?

Thanks in advance!

Call various airlines--some have programs where members donate frequent flyer miles for exactly this purpose. Also contact the administrator of the trial, who may be able to connect you with a social worker who can in turn direct you to other assistance programs.

I live in Florida and flew to Washington, D.C. for a clinical trial which involved travel every three weeks for the first six months, then 4 times a year for the next two years. I did not use any travel services because this travel caused no financial hardship - I regarded it as part of my treatment costs, but I have a no-deductible plan so had very little out of pocket cost despite chemo, Herceptin and numerous surgeries. What I did do though, on my first flight I signed up for the airline credit card - and that provided 1 free roundtrip due to the automatic award for getting the card. I already had cards from two other airline programs so I divided my flights between them, earning free flights as I accumulated miles. Good luck with your trial, I found it to be an excellent experience - hopefully it helped me as an individual, and helped advance the science toward a viable treatment for other patients.

This is a foundation specifically set up for this purpose.

Here is Southwest Airlines program, which I thought of since you are traveling on the west coast and there are a lot of SWA airports. It looks like the airlines gives to the hospital, who then arranges for patients. Not knowing which hospital is running your trial you would have to check it specifically from the list in the link.

Contact Angel Flights West as well! I've been donating to their Northeast sister organization for years!

Likewise, the DH participates in a clinical trial and our flights, hotel and rental car is paid for by the pharmaceutical company. Check and see if there is a nurse navigator who can help you. Good luck!
