Confused - time for recovery and return to work
Heading into surgery this week - BMX, ALND (left), SNB (right), and port insertion (no recon). Asked my surgeon how long to take off from work (desk job - computer/phone work, 20 minute commute) and he said 1.5 to 3 weeks and that women bounce back pretty quickly after this type of surgery. I thought I was being conservative by requesting 3.5 weeks leave from my job.
Now, though, I'm seeing folks on these boards taking 4 weeks for a lumpectomy and 8 weeks or more for BMX. Comments include that amount of time either seemed just right or they could have used more time. Now I'm worried that I will need more time before returning to work. Late August and September are one of our busiest times.
I know every person's recovery is individual, but I'm a bit surprised not to see a bit more uniformity in recommended leave from work, like with childbirth (6 weeks vaginal delivery, 8 weeks C-section).

Everyone's tolerance is sooo different! A lot don't get their drains removed right away either. I just had a single and can't begin to image going back to work after only 10 or 14 days. I don't think of myself as a wuss either, lol. But I have read other peoples stories, like you have, that go back to work very soon. I think you should go with your first inclination on the 3 1/2 weeks or more if you can. Good luck on your surgery and recovery!!

I had a lx and alnd. I was out 3 weeks, mainly because I had drains for 2 of those week. I could have gone back when those were removed but that was the week between Xmas and new year so doctor just told me to go back after the 1st and that is what she put on my paperwork. But I would expect longer with mx. . My neighbor had bc in both breasts. She had lx in one, mx and alnd on other side and she started working from home after 3.5. I think she went back at 6 weeks.

The fact that you are NOT having reconstruction will make the process and recovery time much easier. The reconstruction part is the culprit for a longer and more complicated surgery. Good luck...

Everyone is a bit different in terms of healing time, pain tolerance, etc... and as others have mentioned, not having reconstruction makes for a smoother/quicker recovery period.
For driving, my surgeon told me I was clear to drive once I had the drains out and was no longer taking the narcotic painkillers, but suggested that I put a small pillow between the shoulder strap and my chest until about 2 weeks of healing to make sure the seatbelt strap didn't rub on/irritate my incisions.
For desk work that requires no heavy lifting or no significant upper body work, it seems taking 1-3 weeks off is about average.
My surgeon told me I could go back to work as soon as I felt physically ready, as my job is a desk job that doesn't require lifting anything heavier than a laptop.I took one week off, then did one week working from home as my job allows that but, in all honesty, I'd have been ready to go back on week two and was just trying to be conservative about it and not overdo things.

I took 2.5 weeks off for nearly the same surgery. When I returned to work I was tired but still able to work. The doozie recovery for me was when I had my TEs placed last February. I was out for 3.5 weeks. By week 3 after my mastectomy I was working out and doing light weights and feeling grea

Many folks who report longer recoveries had tissue expanders inserted during mastectomy, some had permanent implants. If the surgery includes reconstruction it is more invasive and takes longer to heal. My insurance STD standard for BMX + reconstruction was five weeks. BMX without reconstruction heals faster, I think you made the right choice by requesting 3 weeks.

From my personal experience, 3.5 weeks for a BMX should be fine as long as you don't have any complications after surgery. And those are rare after a simple BMX.
I took a month off work after my BMX (recon was delayed 2 years), and I really could have gone back to work sooner...but I thought, what the heck. It was summer and I had a sister visiting to take care of me. We had a great visit.

I work from home much of the time, and was back to doing some work on the couch by the end of the same week (MX, 4 nodes removed & prophylactic oopharectomy).
So much depends on YOU, the type of work you do, what type of pain management you end up needing, etc. Go with your gut.

Thanks everyone. I am now home and recovering. At four days out and only took one of my pain pills the first night home. Actually started feeling better once the pain med cleared my system.
Having periods of feelingly amazingly good interspersed with feeling pretty crummy. Hoping the overall trend continues in the right direction. DH has exceeded all of my expectations in taking care of me. He wouldn't even cut the umbilical cord when our babies were born but has been a tremendous help in taking care of my drains and changing bandaging.
