CT and bone scan for DCIS?
hello, I am newly diagnosed as of July 8, with DCIS and I am very confused as to the tests I am scheduled to undergo. In my meeting with my surgeon it was not mentioned that I would be having any other tests done (I have had the mamo, ultrasound, core biopsy). I received a call the day after my initial meeting from my surgeon's office advising that I was going to be scheduled for a CT and bone scan...have any of you had these test for DCIS?
Thank you

CT and bone scan are done to rule out bone mets and would not normally be done if the diagnosis is DCIS. I recommend calling the doctor or the nurse to ask about this.

I had an MRI (to make sure there was only the one area and that the other breast was clear) and there will be CT scans as part of preparing for radiation. I haven't heard of a bone scan being routine.

CT scans are used for treatment planning for radiation therapy but those would not be ordered by the surgeon

Hi DeepBlueC:
I was diagnosed initially with apparently pure DCIS. I had bilateral mastectomy (due to extensive bilateral disease), but no further treatment. Despite some small areas of invasive disease found on surgical pathology, I never had a CT or bone scan (treated at Mass General in Boston, MA).
Since the surgeon did not mention these tests to you, the possibility of a clerical error and/or some miscommunication cannot be eliminated. Therefore, please do not hesitate to call the surgeon's office and request that the surgeon call you back to explain the basis for ordering each of these tests in your specific case, and how the information will be used (purpose). Please also confirm your understanding that your diagnosis is apparently pure DCIS (with no evidence of or concern for invasive disease).
If you have not already done so, as best practice, be sure to obtain copies of the report of the radiologist for all imaging to date (not a summary or letter) and of the pathology report from all biopsies. In the US, you are entitled to copies of your medical records and these should be available to you via on-line portal or the facility can provide copies in some form (e.g., via secure e-mail, fax, hard copy).
For more information about DCIS, if you have not already found it, see this post from Beesie, "A layperson's guide to DCIS":

Thank you all for your words of wisdom
I have spoken to my Dr again and feeling better about the tests, they are for a "better look" and for staging (if needed). Surgery (mastectomy) is flying at me fast (Aug 2) but I am feeling positive for a good outcome.
a friend reminded me of Matthew 6:25-27, it is a great comofort
Prayers to you all
