Military Coup in Turkey. Concern for Stagefree
Dear Friends,
Our beloved Ebru (stagefree) lives in Istanbul. They are in the midst of a military coup and it appears to be moving toward violence. There is martial law and, possibly, a suspension of Internet/social media. I have pm'ed her, but hope you will monitor the news and send prayers/positive thoughts to her, her family and the people of her beloved Turkiye (Turkish spelling that she always uses).

I'm so glad you checked in, Ebru, and I pray for your continued safety. I contacted my Turkish friend locally late afternoon here and asked if his family was okay, and he said not to worry, "it's not like what's on TV." So I stopped worrying for about 30 minutes, and then all hell seemed to break loose. I'd sure hate to be the guys who attempted that coup right now.
Deanna is right -- the happenings in the world are very sad. My nephew (step) lost his uncle and cousin in the Nice attack yesterday. July 14 and 15 were not good days for the world. Last week was ugly in my city due to an ambush on police, where five were gunned down in cold blood. Surely it must get better. It has to get better!

Ebru, prayers for you, your husband, your son, your family and loved ones...foryour country.
lovelife49, so sorry to learn of your nephew's loss and the difficulties in your city of Dallas. Many prayers foryou as well.

Ebru, Praying for you and your country (and ours). Please check in as often as you can. As LoveLife says, Surely it must get better.....

F16 just flew above us, the sound is terrifying. Though things serm to be a bit more under control, a few of the top military commanders managing the coup are still missing.. Probably trying to migrate to close Countries, like Greece..
We are a modern country and a coup will be hell for us! Yes, we have conflict between the right and the left wing, but there's nothing that can't be solved other than by democratic instruments. Thank God all main political parties announced together their suuport for the leading party and the current management of the country earlier today. That does not wipe away possible terrorist attacks, though.. We stay away from crowded areas lik malls.. To be exact, we stayed hoe all day today..
Thank you all for supporting us and our country. We are friendly and peaceful people and hope to stay so..
Hugs
Ebru

Hi Ebru, does your country have regular elections? I worry about all the hateful rhetoric in the US. I hope things get better soon. Stay safe. Hugs.
-
I'm glad you're ok and that things are calming down.
So good all parties want to work together for peace.
Thinking of you
-
ebru. Praying for your country and your safety.

hi Meow,
Yes we do have regular elections, have been ruled by democracy since 1923, have had the first woman prime minister in early 90s and mostly a modern country. What you see on TV, arabic-like people protesting on streets is just a very little percentage of the Turkish society. Normal people do not appear on TV, right?
Turkiye is not a muslim country .. We have a high percentage of Jews, Christians & Atheists .. Etc .. They are all Turkish.. But the main percentage of citizens are Muslims. Mostly very modern like me. Not wrapped up in black veil, educated, working women.. More like European people. This confuses many minds around the world. We are not like those fundamentalist Arabic Muslim countries. Neither are we Arabic.. We are Turkish.
A mixed up nation with people of diverse family roots and cultures is what defines us best. And we are to stay that way. Not defined by Islamic or other religious values, yet respecting them all.. Turkiye has quite many conflicts to deal with, the geopolitical issues never let total peace in the land. Yet, we are all one and hopefully this last coup-to-be will be over before it achieved it's goals...
The guy behind this vicious attempt actually is a refugee in the US, banned to enter his own country years ago. He is the leader of a very powerful islamic group with dictate goals.. Hopefully US will hand him in for proper judgement ..
So happy the coup (the danger is still not over) hopefully will not achive its goals and we will stay a democratic and modern country ..

so glad to hear from you. Hope things calm down. I don't much about Turkey but have heard it's beautiful.

Thanks for the illuminating report, Ebru.

thsnks for the turkey history. I had no idea. Funny where the cameras always find the people to Interview. I live in Arkansas, USA. Always interviewing the one with the missing teeth or some other person to look like an uneducated hillbilly. The power of the people reporting the news is extremely powerful.
-
Ebru, they talked about the guy that you mentioned in the news today.
Stay safe. I wish we were learning about your country & history for a different reason. My daughter spent some time in Istanbul when she was in college. She took amazing photos & loved every minute she was there.

Ebru, sending love and prayers for you, your family and your beautiful country.
