Well this is interesting....

This past month has been a whirlwind of tests and scans. Nothing better than the sleepless nights and constant worry of scanxiety!

About 4 weeks ago I made the mistake of going out and having some fun...dancing! The next day I was in crippling pain and unable to get out of bed. I have a history of back troubles so wasn't too concerned. But day's went by with no improvement so off to a bone scan I went.

Bone scan showedno problem with the area of pain but identifies 4 separate hot spots on my ribs "suspicious for malignancy". Oh great! Now off for a PET.

In to see the ONC yesterday. PET show multiple "sclerotic lesions" on ribs...but no uptake on any. No other signs of uptake anywhere else. Tumor markers are normal. WTF!!

Back in Sep I had a bad chest cough which landed me in hospital for a chest X-Ray. I was having excruciating rib pain (can't remember where) but I suppose one of these "lesions" could be an old fracuture from that time...but all of them?

My ONC has a terrible poker face as he tried to reassure me but I can tell he is a bit worried. I will be having a repeat PET and markers in 3 months.

Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Perhaps a good news story? My bone scan one month before my coughing spell was totally clear.

Thanks

Based on the fact that your bone scan before the cough was clear, it seems likely that you could have injured them coughing. I have seen people fracture ribs from coughing. be sure to update after your next PET. The wait must be horrible

One complication of a lower respiratory infection is costochondritis, or inflammation of the connective tissue of the ribs. Usually viral, but sharply, stabbingly painful. Fortunately, self-limiting. But inflammation can show up on a bone scan, looking like a “hot spot."
