Was supposed to have a double mastectomy next weds, but my PS told me my only option was to live with an open wound for the rest of my life and that just didn't sound right. Surely there's a doctor out there that can do better than that! And no, there wasn't any specific "reason" she believed that would happen. So now I get to start over from square one again. Hopefully this decision isn't going to kill me.

It is hard to know what to tell you since your post did not include any info on your diagnosis. Generally speaking, no, a mastectomy should not leave an open wound. Do you have an advanced tumor that has broken through the skin, or some other special situation? Your post indicates that you do not, and if that is the case, see another surgeon! Also, the mastectomy is typically done by a breast cancer surgeon with the plastic surgeon there to place expanders or do direct to implant surgery following the mastectomies if the you have opted for reconstruction, or to simply make the chest look better if no reconstruction is going to take place. What does your breast cancer surgeon say?

LibbyD, I know you were having trouble with your PS. Are you looking for another one? What about your BS?

Libby I think you need to go back to your BS (not your PS) and get a better sense about your diagnosis, your treatment plan and your team. I remember reading some of your prior posts, and your whole story is making me sad. Your BS needs to provide you with your pathology report- you had mentioned in a prior post that you tumor was 9cm but that aside from that, you didn't have much info. There are many variables that could influence the urgency of your treatment.... And you need to have all the information and be able to talk through all of that with your BS.

Not liking your PS isn't going to make this easier.. So get a new referral. If that means getting the BMX and working solely with a BS to start if it's urgent, and then consulting a PS later- so be it.... The cancer and your BS relationship is important and they should refer you to someone else who honours your needs.
