Is this the Femara? So frustrating

Options

Mom started Femara about 2.5 weeks ago. She is now sicker than she has ever been throughout all of her treatments. She is tired all of the time, in pain, dizzy when doing anything except lying down, stomach issues, you name it.

We thought the end of treatments meant that she would start to feel better but she herself says that she feels worse than ever.

What are the other options that won't make her feel like she is dying? She is waiting to talk to her Oncologist because she just says she can't live like this anymore.

Thanks

Your mom needs to call her doctor tomorrow. I dont know if its the Femara or if theres something else going on. There is no reason for her to suffer this much.

Highly unlikely it’s the Femara. Though it’s not too early for SE’s to kick in, those you list aren’t typical of the drug (except if the pain is joint pain). She’s been through the mill with chemo and very recently the full protocol of whole-breast radiation, which can both be very punishing to the body and (especially radiation) have cumulative and delayed effects. She needs to see not just her oncologist but her primary and perhaps a psychiatrist--depression is nothing to ignore. The vertigo is also troubling and shouldn’t be a symptom of an AI--an ENT consult is not out of the question.

odd... I read up on SE's for Letrozole and it said dizziness is a common SE?

In any case she spoke with her MO today and he took her off of it. He will see her in 2 weeks and then discuss Tamoxifen. He believes this is all cause by the Letrozole.

Chi sandy...sorry but Im going to have to disagree with you. I believe all those symptoms could be from the anti hormone. Lets try to validate what this woman is feeling and not just assume it's depression....

    BTW usually love your posts

When I switched from anastrazole to Femara I felt horrible. Here is a list of common side effects. "Common side effects of Femara include hot flashes, hair loss, joint/bone/muscle pain, tiredness, unusual sweating or night sweats, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, weight gain, weakness, flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling), headache, constipation, numbness/tingling/weakness/stiffness in your hand or fingers, or pain in your hand that spreads to your arm, wrist, forearm, or shoulder." I would have her call her MO tomorrow

I switched back to anastrazole as quickly as I could, fewer and less sever side effects. Everyone reacts differently. One that is not mentioned here is I developed vaginal dryness that triggered back and hip pain. A vaginal moisturizer really helped eliminate the back and hip pain.

I've had all those symptoms (and others) from AIs, worse on some types than others. Didn't do well on Tamoxifen either -- hope your mother is different.

Sometimes just switching medications can make you feel better; coversely, sometimes your body adjusts after a couple of months and tolerates the same medication better. Oddly enough my second "round" with letrozole (Femara) is not quite as bad as the first, but still has a major impact on my quality of life. Side effects vary tremendously from one person to the next.

Every side effect listed for Femara is pretty much the same for all three AIs. Some are commoner than others--helps to read package inserts (or prescribing info on website) for actual percentages. I’m sorry I gave the impression that your mom’s symptoms are due to pre-existing depression or that she even had depression before diagnosis--it isn’t uncommon for the cumulative physical stress of treatments and then withdrawal of estrogen to induce the neuro-biochemical imbalance that causes (or is the hallmark of) major clinical depression, or at least anxiety. It’s not emotional. It’s a hardware, not a software, problem--but should be ruled out first. My MO and most sources list the most common SE’s of AIs (espec. letrozole) as joint pain & stiffness, muscle aches, hot flashes & night sweats, insomnia, weight gain; and less often, hair thinning, lethargy (from the same impaired metabolism that causes weight gain) and gastric distress. But the effects of chemo & radiation--especially gastro-intestinal distress, vertigo and fatigue can’t be discounted--those treatments are recent enough that there are residual side effects. Perhaps the overlay of the AI is intensifying them.

I have used both Arimadex (Anastrozole) and Femara (Letrozole). The symptoms your Mom has experienced are all the Side effects I experienced while on Arimadex........I took that one for 15 months and I was sick for every day of that time. The Femara I have been on for five and a half years with very few side effects.

We all react differently to these drugs and it sometimes takes a little trial and error to find the best one for us and even though both Arimadex and Femara belong to the AI group and have pretty much the same side effects listed we can tolerate and react very differently to them.

Your Mom did the right thing to contact her Onc and I'm glad that she has stopped the medication. Perhaps after a small break she will feel better and her system be able to tolerate any new medication that is given.

    Love n hugs. Chrissy

Thanks everyone! Today she feels worse BUT, I have read that Femara has some withdrawal effects and can take a few days to get out of your system, so I am thinking it is just that. Hopefully she starts to feel better because she is getting depressed about it. My sister is getting married on July 31 and she wants to be good for the wedding.
