Just diagnosed with Dcis and pregnant. Palm Springs area

hi everyone. I'm new here. I am so upset about all of this as I am 38 weeks pregnant. 26 years old. expecting my second baby in a couple weeks.. I was diagnosed with "low grade Dcis" right next to nipple. 2cm by 2cm. Such a rotten place. I have so many questions. I was hoping to find anyone that lives in Southern California - even Palm Springs area. I see my breast surgeon dr Laura lee at desert regional tomorrow for our "treatment approach". I am so nervous... So so nervous. So much anxiety.

I did get the chance to speak w her on the phone because i needed to know if I could breast feed or not. She said it's likely I will have my nipple taken as that was one question I had. I whave two little children I am wanting a Second opinion but traveling to La (2 hours) every day for treatment may be too hard for me. Anyone experience having nipple taken? At first it sounded like Dcis was the best type to get but after constant reading and research it sounds like it puts everyone in a predicament...

Any thoughts or support or advice would be so helpful. I am so confused. Worried for my children. So many decisions.

    I second the idea of getting a second opinion from COH or UCLA, to make sure you are getting the latest strategies for DCIS, because you are so young, and because your situation is complicated by pregnancy and childbirth. You could still get treatment closer to home. If you call, be sure to explain why you need a very fast appointment, with a baby due soon.

    As far as breastfeeding, I recommend getting expert advice on how to breastfeed successfully with one breast and how to work around treatment. I would call La Leche League and a lactation consultant. There might be strategies like pumping to increase production, storing your milk, supplementing in a way that does not cause nipple confusion, etc. Not all conventional medical people are as knowledgeable or supportive of breastfeeding as they ought to be. Hopefully your doctors will work with your lactation consultant as a team. Congratulations on your new baby! Enjoy your beautiful children in spite of this diagnosis.

    First, just hang in there and take one thing at a time. Stress is not your friend right, but it is understandable. We have all been in your shoes.

    I just read an article on Facebook where a mother was in a similar situation and she was able to breast fed her child. She didn't take no for an answer when speaking with the La Leche League at the hospital. I just think this is new territory for them, but she did find someone who was willing to work with her and figure out what needed to be done during her chemotherapy. She was able to pump her breast milk to compensate for the time she was on treatment. Thing is, it's doable. Do you have a close friend that can help you with this research to help take the stress off of you.

    Cgozz - so sorry you are facing this just weeks from birth of 2nd baby. Glad you found these boards good info.

    I did all my treatment at Eisenhower Lucy Curri in Rancho Mirage. I had an excellent team, but I did not have your challenges. Dr. Peter Schutz BS, Dr Luke Driebach MO great support programs services offered there.

    My hubby went to USC Keck Cancer. It is excellent. There was a young woman, 25, who went there in early 2013 and received excellent care and there was much discussion on pregnancy children. I would go there fir my 2nd opinion. Carpool and make appointments after 10:30am and it is a breeze. Straight in on I10....easy cruse in 80 minutes.

    USC is a leading cancer teaching research hospital rated highly in US.

    Wednesday at 12-1:30 Lucy Curci hasa breast support group...I learned a lot from the ladies, staff, social worker, and nurse practitioner there...you might try and go...Rosemary is great

    Glasslady, is it possible there is a little mix-up about the story on Facebook? I would be surprised to see the La Leche League people saying no, because in my experience, they are really committed to helping mothers make it work. And if they have a difficult case, they know about private lactation consultants who can be called in. But I wouldn't be too surprised if the hospital-employed "lactation" person was subject to uninformed doctors, or unused to thinking outside the box.
