Hello summer rads friends!
Just had my first treatment today! Easy! Took 20 minutes and most was setup time. I'm sure it will get more challenging but at least it is short and sweet!
I will have 16 whole breast and 5 boosts which is the Canadian protocol. I can handle 21 days after all that chemo time. Looking forward to seeing more summer rad people join the thread

I have my first radiation consult on July 6th and scheduled to begin the 33 rounds the week after. I'm beyond excited to be done with chemo. Not at all sure what to expect with the radiation.

Hello. I got my sim done last week along with my tattoos. Did my dry run today and starting the real thing tomorrow on entire right breast and axilla. My first cancer was DCIS and I had a BMX. 8 years later (now), I was initially diagnosed with DCIS again, but later changed to IDC stage 1, grade 1, ER+ by 2nd opinion from Mayo. Nodes are difficult to determine because due to the BMX, my nodal pathways were destroyed, (so I don't think I have an a or b designation). Surgeon did not do a SNB upon the lumpectomy. After a re-excision due to unclear margins, DCIS was found multi-focally and the IDC is just in the main tumor (1cm). I have had an ultrasound to look at my nodes (twice) and they appear normal. My MO indicates due to the size and stage of my tumor that node involvement is likely less than 1%. None of my doctors suggest a biopsy or PET. So... they are going to rad the nodes (just in case).
I am nervous to start, but am also anxious. The sooner I start, the sooner I can be done. But I am most nervous about my nodes. Scared that something undetected is there and has or will metastasize... Trying not to dwell on that, but will likely always be hypersensitive to any aches and pains now.
Looking at 36 treatments starting tomorrow. Wow, my shoulders already ache just from my sim and dry run. Mine has me holding some handlebars high above my head. Also, I must be a really itchy person, because I think I must have had about 30 itches that I couldn't scratch during my dry run today... LOL!
-
3 down, 18 to go. Only thing I notice is my nipple seems a little sensitive.
Kechla I would likely worry too. I never had any scans or anything but the chemo was supposed to get any stragglers out there that may have slipped past my nodes. 36 treatments is a lot. I find this goes so fast and easy compared to Chemo. Of course I may not feel that way as I go along if it gets painful.
Trixie, I think you will find this much easier. I got 5 tattoos as well. Setting up takes longer than the rads but I am out of the room within 20 minutes.
-
I am also a summer girl! I started last Monday so 6 out of 30 done. So far no big deal, just a little bit pink and maybe a little sore. The appointments themselves are super fast and the girls at my place are SO nice and fun to see in the morning!
Kechia, I would also be worried but the chemo would have caught any stragglers. If it helps you can always get a second opinion.
I know for me my biggest worry is this coming back. I am doing everything I can so that doesn't happen...radiation and years of tamoxifen! Not looking forward to the side effects, but I will deal with it!
BTW, lots of good info on the spring rads board so go check it out

Hi everyone,
I started June13th and had my 11th treatment today. My breast is looking and feeling sunburned; irritated and slightly itchy, but manageable. I have been feeling tired andtonight my whole upper body is sore - almost flu-type achiness. Not sure if it's a side effect or if I'm actually coming down with something (don't think so as the usual "I'm getting sick" symptoms aren't present). I saw my RO this afternoon and we gave each other a thumbs up as this pain didn't start until this evening. Hopefully it'll pass.
11 down, 23 to go.
Take care, everyone. Gentle hugs to all.

Hello ladies! Just popping in from the Spring Rads group! I started radiation on June 13th. I had 12/25 today! Just about halfway. I'm starting to turn a little pink, but no discomfort yet.
KarenC - You might want to check out page 31 and 32 of Spring Rads. Several ladies were discussing painful nipples and posting some ways they have found relief!
Good luck to those of you currently undergoing rads and to those of you who will be starting soon!
-
I started today. They set it up and did the first session. I came home, put on a swimsuit and t-shirt and swam with my girls. I will do this as long as they say it is OK.
As long as there aren't any schedule changes, I will be done August 12. Can't wait!
Here is the countdown links I made with the girls last night. They are being very good about all of this.
-
Tomorrow I have my simulation and tattoos. I'm actually nervous about it. I start 33 rads in a couple weeks. I know it should be not as bad as chemo but 6 1/2 weeks seems like such a long time.
-
Hello Summer rad crew, I have my first consult on July 18th and am actually looking forward to it as 8 months ago, I just didn't know how I would get through chemo snd surgery without going off the deep-end. I don't know what to expect but so far I have come through everything surprisingly well and withlittle discomfort--praise God. My radiation oncologist is retiring soon so I am hoping to finish up my treatment with her.
-
Hello summer crew
I'm on number 5 of 33. will finish up august 8, due to 4th of july weekend. So far my skin is ok. Having aches and pains from lying on that hard table and having my arms in a awkward position.
I use aloe gel, and aquaphor at night. so far so good. I also have miaderm.
-
I start radiation on July 25. I had my sims 2 weeks ago and tattoos. I'm happy to be finishing chemo this week but nervous about rads
-
7 of 30 done. It really seems to be going fast, next thing I know I will be all done! Skin still a lovely shade of pink, but that's it so far. Maybe a tiny sore and itchy around the incision but nothing to complain about! The only thing I noticed today is around 11:00 am, I felt like I hit the wall hard. Still beyond tired but hitting the sack early. Not sure if radiation related or a virus??!! Good luck to all the newbes, it honestly just becomes routine
-
ejmann, how old are your girls? I have two girls as well, ages 10 and 12. Occasionally, they accompany me to my radiation treatments. We usually go out for frozen yogurt or stop by the gourmet cupcake shop (I have gained 2 pounds since starting radiation) on the way home. I try to make it somewhat enjoyable. They have been awesome throughout this whole ordeal, but I know hanging with mom at radiation is not how they envisioned their summer break! Lol!
We have a pool as well. It is not uncommon for the temperature to be in the triple digits most of the summer, so when we are home, we are always in the water! My RO said that as long as I am covered up and show no signs of skin irritation, she sees no reason for me to aviod the water. Unfortunately, I started turning pink yesterday (12/25 treatments), so I will be wading in up to my waist from here on out.
I have been using Cetaphil in the morning, aloe vera directly following my treatment and then Eucerin a couple times at night. Now that I am starting to turn pink, I will ask about adding Aquaphor to the mix. I also have hydrocortisone cream on hand for if/when my skin begins to itch.
Hoping everyone has a enjoyable week! As we like to say on the Spring Rads thread #RadiateTHIS!

Hi Everyone
7/33 done. No pink yet, but I am sensitive under my arm, and my back itches. Saw RO today and he says my skin is doing well but to expect the redness soon. I use aloe right after treatment and aquaphor at night. It really calms down the warm feeling I get at night.
Today is the first day I got tired, but had to take my 86 year old mom to the Dr., she is a handful.
-
I posted here, but maybe I should be on the Spring rads board? 13/34 today. Still pretty wiped out but mornings seems to be the better time of day.
Carlsoda - there are definitely days were I seem to run full speed ahead into a wall and then the next day, it's better. I hope it's better for you as well.
There's a YouTube video of a sweet little polar bear baby who can't for the life of him roll over onto his tummy from his back. Just trying so hard to get up, flailing from side to side but with no luck. That's how I feel sometimes. Just trying to get up and be active and cut through the fatigue. I have grumbled to my husband, "I am the baby polar bear" and he understands. But the polar bear does finally flip over and get on his tummy and eventually I do too.
Takke care everyone.

Hi Truffles,
My girls are 10 and 11. We homeschool year round but haven't done much this past month. My husband works from home so he stays with the girls while I run over to do radiation. We live in a community across the street from a big medical building so it is literally a 5 min drive. I am very lucky. My MO is also in the same building.
I finished number 2 today. I know it will be a while before I see any issues. I do feel tired but that might be the arimedex I started. I have to nap during the day to make it through.
Today at radiation a lady suggested drinking Propel water to replace electrolytes.
-
No radiation for me today, equipment issues so it will be tacked on at the end. Still standing at 7 out of 30
Polkadotpurse...thanks for the words of encouragement. Today I was pretty tired but I noticed I felt slightly better after meals. Added energy I guess! Still not sure if it is virus or rads and time will only tell! How is your skin holding up?
Valstim, yes taking your mom to the doctor would definitely tire you out! My coworker just put her 93 year old mom in assisted living and boy the stories I have heard. Her mom is hilarious for an outsider but definitely not for family!
Now...time for sleep
-
Day 6 of rads done plus my doctors visit. Was not aware that for the next year I will burn across the radiated area for a full year after, and then always tan quicker there later. Mexico is my resting place for 2 weeks in January!I just went on Amazon and ordered some uv swim/tshirt tops with a 50 SPF since I can't use sunscreen yet either and will be out in the sun. She actually said she would worry about the shirt I have on as it has a v neck. Never ending lol!
I noticed a very slight pink today, am hoping after 5 more it does not get too much worse or itch. My friend booked a room with a saltwater pool that I can enjoy next weekend as long as none of that is happening. Maybe the 3 day weekend will help. Our holiday here is tomorrow.
I am definitely getting sleepy and worn out. I am looking forward to no rads tomorrow and sleeping in if I can.
15 more to go, 10 whole and 5 boosts!
Taking my mom back there for her first consult with radiation oncologist today, she was just dx with a different kind of cancer (not breast), but will find out more later.

Hello Summer Rads!!!!
I have my SIMs tomorrow; to say I'm anxious is an understatement. Thank you to those who are on the Spring Rads thread ur input has been so valuable. I know they say radiation doesn't compare to chemo, but I'm anxious to just get this routine started and over with!!!

Day 3. A little warm but not pink. I do feel like some stabbing discomfort, though. More annoying than anything. I will say I am tired but it could be the Arimedex.
-
Hi, I start radiation (16 treatments) on July 6.
-
Hi Terrywithawhy-
Welcome to BCO! We hope you find these boards to be a source of support as you begin your rads. Good luck with your treatment, and we hope to see you on the boards!

Welcome Terrywithawhy!
8/30 done and holding up. I am still feeling under the weather, but making sure to get lots of rest!
How is everyone else doing

My RO is recommending only coconut oil on my skin. Anyone else have this same opinion from their RO? She thinks very highly of it, antimicrobial, antibacterial, moisturizing. I'm just using the stuff made for cooking from the organic foods section (her suggestion). It's actually really nice. It doesn't stay greasy and absorbs really well. I also have thrown in a couple applications of real aloe from my aloe plant so far. Anything else I should consider? I'm only on #4, but have 32 more to go including 8 boosts, so I'm trying to stay ahead of the curve. How often are the rest of you applying oils/lotions on your skin?
I have implants from reconstruction (8 years ago), so am worried about contracture. I can feel a tightness/tenderness in the muscles just to either side of my sternum. Anyone else have this? Maybe it is from my positioning and not the rads... Strange that it is on both sides.
Anyone else have implants (saline) while doing radiation? Any suggestions on what I can do to help prevent/reduce contracture? Already doing stretches and self massage... I met with a PS prior to starting and he indicated contracture was almost 100% likely. The degree of contracture (3 or 4) will dictate whether it needs to come out...
-
Kelcha - I just met with my RN for skin care and she said to apply 4 times a day and to stay out of the sun from 12-3. She also said to increase protein intake. Drinking lots of water helps. She said if you have previous sun damage on your chest to expect rash/itching. No help on the implants from me. I just finished number 4 today so we are on the same schedule.
I hope everyone enjoys their weekend! We have dogs and mini horses so one adult will be with the dogs and the other with the minis (we board them) because of the fireworks. We still enjoy the standard menu, though.
-
Thanks ej. I was applying twice, so will kick that up to 4x!
I hope your animals stay calm this weekend! Enjoy!
-
Kechla - I do saline soaks whenever I feel the heat (2 tsp of salt in 1L of cooled, boiled water), follow with aloe from my aloe plant and then if it gets really irritated, Flammazine (prescription cream). I do the saline soaks and aloe as many times a day as I need, with Flammazine 3 times a day, max. I spend a lot of the day inside, with no shirt on - easy enough as it's only my hubby and I home now. This toplessness is also helping me adjust to the looks of my new chest. I am currently at 15/25 rads done. Can't provide any insight on implants.
Am planning a trip to Florida and a Caribbean cruise in Nov/Dec, what a treat!!
Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians and Happy July 4th to our American friends on Monday.
-
Finished #6 of my 21 rads yeaterday and had my weekly check in with my nurse. Was unaware that the whole area that gets the rads will burn up to a year after rads and then always tan first after that. I had a v neck tshirt on which she said would cause me to burn if I was out in the sun. I ended up going on Amazon and ordering a 50 spf tshirt and one t/swim shirt as I usually go to Mexico in January and want to be protected, plus they will help now until I can use sunscreen.
The only cream we are recommended to put on is Glaxol base creams 3 X a day. I just have to let them know if there are any issues. Was also recommended to me not to put it on too thick as the skin can only absorb so much. I can't believe I have only 15 more - 3 weeks- and I'll be done. No redness yet. I have a festival weekend next weekend so I hope all stays okay. I have been really tired and sleep a lot though.
Hope everyone who is celebrating long weekends (Canada day here today) have great weekends despit this interruption in our life!!!?

I straddle the Spring and Summer rads. I had zap number 11 this morning out of 16 WBI, with 4 Boosts, so I am halfway (11/20). I use vitamin E oil right after treatment, then use coconut oil in the evening. The vitamin E is really sticky, but I haven't blistered yet, so I guess it is doing its job. My inner arm and skin below my underarm are the most sensitive and pink right now. I actually had to take Tylenol the last couple of days for pain of my arm rubbing against the tender skin on my side.. And the days of wearing a bra are now past. I wear a tank top or camisole with another shirt over it. I am looking forward to the three-day weekend, to recover a bit. Happy Canada Day to all Canadian BCO sisters, and Happy 4th to those BCO sisters in the States.
