I am past 5 years . I am afraid to stop taking it and my onc says he will allow me to continue. I would to know what side effects I really do have by stoppig it but I am so afraid to. Good luck to you.

Thank You candie 1971. I've been told that it only protects you for the 5 yrs., as the study only lasted that long. I'm not sure if I myself would take it any longer. I want to think that I've beaten it. But I always worry.

I am on my final 9 months. I am a little scared to stop too.I heard there are studies where they are discovering 10 years works better than 5. I truly hate the side effects, like weight gain, confusion, and stiffness. Having said that, I would rather have the SE than the cancer back.

I did not experience mood swings or depression.   Best of luck and God bless.

jack55ok , glad to hear you talk of the confusion and all. I feel that way al the time and it is scarey! I have the stiffness and weight gain also. I ,too, woud rather have the SE also.

I am at the 4.5 year mark taking Arimidex and am just about to give it up.  I have had every SE in the book, frozen shoulders, insomnia, vaginal dryness that is now an Olympic sport, depression but now the bone and joint pain is getting to me.  I spoke to my Onc who states ok to stop.  The ATAC study which is what the AI's are based was a 5 year trial but the info doesn't state anything about 5 years but a magic number.  Any thoughts?

I am so glad now that more research is being done on remaining on AIs.  Something must be done about those who have mets 18-20 years after dx.

Aug - I could only do the AIs for ten months, then went back to Tamoxifen. Still I'm counting the days - 22 months left. I started a year late, I may quit at five years from dx anyway which would only be four years of HT.
