Hello,

Has anyone had experience with the removal of a ruptured silicone breast implant?

The implant was done 27 years ago as a result of a radical mastectomy.

Ultimately after its removal, mum would like a new prosthesis implanted. She understands it may not be possible as we have had 1 surgeon say it can't be done.

His description of the procedure to remove the ruptured implant does not seem logical, that is why I would like to ask for feedback from anyone who has had an implant removed revealing a "caved in chest".

I really value any response, even if it is not relevant to mums situation.

Thankyou,

Bubblinky

I have not needed to have an implant replace. However, I did ask my surgeon about how one would remove and replace an implant.

My implants are in pockets in the pectoral muscles. He said an incision would be made on the old scar line, the muscles moved and the implant removed from the pocket and the new one put in.

I wonder if what your surgeon is basing the problem with replacement on the old techniques and old style prosthesis. I also don't know what he means by a "caved in" chest.

I had cadaver skin used to reinforce the muscle layer and my prostheses are thicker skinned with a more gel like silicone interior than prostheses from 27 years ago.

While the use of the tissue matrix is standard procedure in the USA, I don't know if it is used where ever you are from (I am guessing the UK from the use of the word "Mum").

Sorry I couldn't help more. Are you limited to the one surgeon or can you have consults with additional surgeons that use different implant techniques?

I don't know if my situation is applicable to your mother, but my silicone gel implant ruptured after it had been in only 5 months. I think it was faulty, although no medical professional will admit that. My PS went in and took the old one out and put a new one right in. However, mine hadn't been in very long. Hope you find some answers.
