MRI found lesion that cant be found on US/ mamm/CBE - anyone?
Perimenopausal mom of young special needs child, nervous as heck.
Mom dx'd with Stage 3 cancer 32 yrs ago, at 52, close to same age. Maternal Aunt just dx'd with Stage 2 at age of 60.
No one ever told me this, despite annual mamms for past decade, but I have "extremely dense breasts".
I had pain on xmas eve and found small palpable mass. Went in for diagnostic mamm and US and they found it plus another nearby. They were core biopsied, finding that they were radial scars. Surgically removed in case they were hiding cancer. None found. I was assured that I just needed to relax and not worry about my breast pain or breast health (implication that I was a worry wart). They said they would do another mamm in 5-6 months. I requested MRI instead and they agreed.
MRI last week. I expected a clear result due to the patronizing talk I had gotten about not worrying. Instead I was called by the radiologist to report they had found a lesion and that I needed to come in for a US. I went in for a US and they told me that they confirmed it and that it was highly suspicious. Given that I am in the middle of interviewing for a new job (unemployed due to my prior employer being acquired), I begged for a quick biopsy. US guided biopsy. They took tissue and marked the place with a clip but it turns out that they just found yet another (3rd) radial scar. Another MRI showed that they lesion showing on MRI is not in the same place (but all lesions in the past 6 months have been in the same quadrant of the same breast - within 1.5 cm of each other).
They cannot do an MRI guided biopsy as I have too little tissue.
So, I am standing in line, trying to get an appt for surgical biopsy. Due to the holiday and the precedence of already diagnosed people, it sounds like it could be weeks before I know anything. It is a very busy center in a big city.
Has anyone had this happen - MRI mass not found otherwise by CBE (by BS), Mamm or US?
I have asked a million questions but forgot to ask if the fact that it is seen only on MRI implies that it is more likely to be Cancer. I am so scared. I don't have anyone else that can take care of my very sensitive special needs son - there is no one in the family who would step up to the plate. My husband is suddenly ill too with a variety of painful autoimmune diseases. I am the primary breadwinner.
The surgeon did admit that they are worried, but that they cannot tell what it is. The surgeon also did admit that all this activity in one quadrant of a small breast was worrisome with my family history, and that I would be closely monitored with MRI from now on if I am lucky enough to not have cancer already.
Thanks,
Worried Mom

So sorry you are going through this. It's not unusual for a MRI to pick up a lump that was not seen on mammo or u/s. Its actually common when you have dense breasts. However that does not mean that there is more of a chance that it is cancer. Also try to remember that there can be false positives on MRIs. I had 5 suspicious areas on MRI and only 1 was malignant. Hang in there. Good luck and keep us posted....

Thanks so much for your reply. I think I need anti-anxiety meds. I am a mess.
