I feel like I am getting the run around. I made an appointment with a surgery center for a biopsy (which I am not even sure is possible yet...), but anyway, she said the surgeon was a general surgeon who had experience with breasts. When I called the breast center, they told me to cancel that appointment and get a breast surgeon. I call back the original surgery center and explained this to them, this time I'm speaking to a different receptionist, and she says the surgeon is a general surgeon who specializes in breasts and that there is no difference between a breast surgeon and a general surgeon who specialized in breasts? Is this accurate??

Yes, it is true. Breast surgeons are general surgeons specializing in breasts. I have a friend who is a surgeon who specializes in breasts and has never done anything else, but she is still considered a general surgeon

All breast surgeons, those who do nothing but breast surgery, are general surgeons. Many have taken additional classes or coursework, but there is no board certification for breast surgery like there is for a gastroenterologist or dermatologist, for example. My surgeon, has narrowed his focus further as an oncological breast surgeon, meaning that he only deals with breast cancer patients, or those suspected of having breast cancer.

I agree with all of the above but also want to add that in addition to using a breast surgeon IMO you should be treated at a university based teaching hospital. Good luck and keep us posted...
