Surgery 4 weeks later and still
have one drain!
it is still putting out 50ml every 24 hours, no change at all in 3 weeks.
I had a single mast. with TE on May 4. The PS said he is pulling it today no matter what. Which makes me nervous. If I have problems he will need to go back in surgery and put a new drain in.
Anybody else have this problem? I'm healing perfectly except this one stupid drain.

they pulled it, 2 days later back in surgery to put it back in. this Wednesday will be 6 weeks.
and it started to slow down, but now is picking up again. I am going out of my mind. I'm so depessed. I'm on antibiotics so I can't even go out in the sun. which basically means I cant go anywhere because it's in the 90's here and how do I dress for that?
they won't release me to go back to work until it's out, which basically means when I do go back I'm sure to be fired. they already hired someone else so it's just a matter of time.
my life is in ruins. I just sit alone and cry most of the time.
-
Oh suz - What a crazy time you're having with this healing. I'm sorry things have been so complicated. Totally sucks. I promise you these are among the darkest days. As if a cancer dx wasn't stress enough. One foot in front of the other, that's all you can do right now. I started on an antidepressant about two months out, it was a very bleak time. Maybe ask your doctor about that - they can help with hot flashes anyway. I know it is rough right now. It WILL get better. Gentle hug.
-
Week 6 mark yesterday. Still have the drain.
went 2 days with it being 30ml total per 24 hour period. then spiked yesterday up to 45.
I'm done. I cannot do this any longer. Monday I have to discuss options. if that means removing it all I'm doing it.
I'm losing myself. the stress of the drain game is taking its toll so much that I don't see me anymore. and that scares me.
I don't even want to discuss it with even the closest to me. I avoid even talking to my sister because I know she will ask and I have to discuss it and I just cant.
there has got to be something wrong.

Hi Suz2016:
You mentioned you were on antibiotics, but the fluid output is not slowing. Have they cultured or could they culture some of the fluid and review the choice of antibiotic? Just a thought.
Sending healing thoughts your way.

Suz, you sound depressed and who wouldn't be? You've been through a lot. Have you thought about asking your doctor for something to help you cope with the ongoing stress? A lot of us need a little help with this.
I had drains in after my BMX. Two were in for 4-5 weeks. I also had to have a wound vac on for 7 weeks due to massive tissue loss and a great big open wound on my chest. So lovely. Not. I thought of lose my mind. I became listless, withdrawn, uncommunicative, and irritable . Didn't feel like bathing, jcouldnt sleep, and LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE. Thankfully, my doctor was responsive. She listened to my story and immediately diagnosed me with PTSD. I was able to start some meds which helped a lot.
-
yep, that's me.
I had the drain replaced 2 weeks ago tomorrow. they did a culture and nothing grew.
I've been on antibiotics too where I can't go in the sun. it's june!!!!! everything is outside in the sun in june!!!!!! grrrrr.
summer clothes are also hard to hide a drain in. no, I lose a lot of sleep because they are so uncomfortable it wakes me up if I move.
I have work related meetings all next week and expected to be done with this stage by then. now I'm thinking I have no work clothes that I can hide this in so clients don't see them. I'm losing $$$ every day it's in.
blah. I'm wondering if the expander is removed and I forego reconstruction at all how long the recovery from that would be?
-
and I'm sorry you went through that. I know I'm bing a total baby about it.
-
Ladies, I have been there and know what you mean. I had my drains for five weeks until the PS eventually said she is pulling them out no matter what. She did it at five weeks and everything was fine afterwards. I went back to work the day after. One thing that might help to slow the drainage, is limiting your physical activity.
-
Suz2016. I had my drains removed on day 6 because of horrendous pain. My output on the drains, #B was like 12, but the #A drain was still putting out around 45 a 24 hour period. My surgeon said she had no problem taking them out early if I wanted. That was this past Monday, and I've not had any complications from it.
-
Suz this is awful. You are NOT being a baby. I would have lost my mind to have a drain that long. I want to give you some hopefully helpful hints on dealing with the drain, but I also want to tell you what I would do if I were you: I would get a second opinion. Now. Right now. Maybe your ps is right, and this is just how it has to be; however, I have never heard of a drain being pulled and then having surgery to put it back in. I'm sure it has happened in the world before, it just doesn't sound like a doctor who is doing things with certainty and confidence, and that is what you need right now. Can you get yourself to a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center? There is one in Chicago and one in Madison: http://www.cancer.gov/research/nci-role/cancer-cen....
They would both be a drive for you, but it sounds like it would be worth it.
I am not judgmental about other's decisions; we do what we have to do. However, I feel that sometimes psychiatric medications are given out to "help us deal" with things that we should actually work on changing. Admittedly, sometimes we can't change things (like a cancer diagnosis). But before you start taking mood altering drugs, how about a second opinion on your plastic surgery treatment?
Here are my tips on drains, which were THE WORST part of my BMX:
1. Wear a surgical (compression) bra; this helps reduce swelling and also pushes the fluid out. Use "abdominal gauze pads" (obtained from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Covidien-9190A-Abdominal-Ba...=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1466109748&sr=8-3&keywords=abdominal+gauze+pads ) under the seam of the bra. I experimented; often I used one under the drain (between the skin and the drain) and also one over my drain (between the drain and the bra).
2. Put pillows under your shoulders and head and sleep propped slightly. Or get in a recliner to sleep. Or experiment with pillows propping you up under each shoulder. I am a side sleeper and had two drains on each side for weeks so couldn't sleep on my side (not to mention the pain of the TEs). When I started to be able to sleep on my side, I found if I was slightly propped up and then I had a pillow for my arm I could do it.
3. Button down linen long shirts in nice colors over jeans, slacks, khaki pants, with a light scarf looped around your neck covers the drains and is breezy when it is hot. I am tall so need tall sizes, but in any event I bought most of the stuff online from The Limited and they were gorgeous in Tall or regular sizes. I had my BMX in the middle of a heat wave. Put on a big hat, your arms are covered by the shirt, you look stylish and no one knows.
4. You can pin your drain bulb up onto the surgical bra, hidden underneath the cute shirt and lightweight scarf; You can also wear a belt with pockets made for your drains. There are several kinds but here is one: https://www.amazon.com/Mastectomy-Drainage-Pockets-Enough-Changer/dp/B01G9F6RX8/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1466109912&sr=8-6&keywords=mastectomy+drain+belt
Let us know how it goes. It WILL come to an end. Hang in there.

Suz, you are soooo not being a baby. This isn't a contest. You are entitled to feel your feelings.
Ispy gave you good advice about sleeping propped up. By far, the worst part of my BMX was sleeping on my back with the drains in. They were so uncomfortable and I'm a stomach sleeper to start with, so I had a real hard go of it. I bought a bed wedge which elevated my head about 7" and used pillows to prop under each arm so I wouldn't accidently roll over during the night. Not that I was sleeping. I was terribly uncomfortable, in just about every way possible. After 5 nights of not sleeping, I called my doctor and begged her for something to help me sleep. (I have bipolar disorder and the quickest road to mania for me is insomnia.) Within days I felt better, had more energy, and less depression because I was no longer sleep deprived.
I second her suggestions for hiding the drains. Honestly, layering is the way to go. You should be able to wear a sleeveless top with a lightweight jacket over it. Just pin your drains up under your arms and no one will notice. Or thread a belt through the loops of the drains and wear then that way. Necklaces will draw the eye to center and away from the drains under your arms. That ought to pretty well hide everything. In the 7 weeks that I wore the wound vac--which is a dressing attached to the wound, with about 6 feet of tubing that goes to a machine about the size of a lunch box--I only had 3 people ask me what it was. And this thing wasn't quiet either! I just said I had had some surgery and it was helping with the healing. And then we all moved on.
-
thank you for all the advice. one of the problems is, right now, i'm so broke from being off work for 7 weeks that I honestly can't afford to go out and buy any new clothes. and I don't want to put any more charges on my credit card. I'll need to find something I already have.
and given that I've been laying around for 7 weeks I've gained a couple pounds and nothing fits at all, except dresses and I can't pin this in a dress. I'm gping to go through things today and see if I can find something. i'll have to wear the same thing to work everyday, but oh well.
when I say I've done nothing I mean nothing! I may take my dog for a short walk (4 or 5 houses down the block) so I'm more worried about stamina. since I work quite a distance from home (2 hours door to door when I travel to the chicago) I'm very concerned about fatigue. I still get tired so easy, and when I go to Chicago there is a lot of walKing so I he I can physically do that!
I have read on this board a few women who have had to have drains up back in. my PS removed it at 4 weeks because it looked skanky and he was worried about infection. he said sometimes that the drain itself can irritate the tissues and cause problems. so, we had a 50/50 shot that I would or wouldnt have problems. I was still at 50 ml a day then. within 2 days my foob was swollen, red, and hot. I went in the next day and he opened it up, irrigated it and cultured to check for infection, and put in the new drain.
that was 2 weeks ago today with the 2nd drain. I started off at 60ml, then this Monday I got my final expansion. I was so excited because Monday I only had 30ml, and Tuesday I only had 30ml so I thought this is it!!!! I called my PS on Wednesday and he wanted to give it til thursday. on Thursday it was back up to 45ml!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this morning I was at 20, so if I only have 15 the rest of the day I'll be back at 30. then, praying for tomorrow and Sunday to be 30 too then I can get this out Monday.
I do feel that if by Monday this is still happening I will call for a second opinion. I'm just not sure that this is all worth it, especially when I asked if drains are involved in the switch to an implants and I heard yes. I don't think I can do this again.
thank you all! I apprecite the advice. and I don't want to go the route of anti depressants. I'm weird about any prescription drugs. I have a prescription for the estrogen blockers but won't take it until this drain issue is over. if I have side effects from it I want to k ow that is the reason and not something else. once this drain is out and I'm no longer on antibiotics I'll start taking it. mo told me it only gives me about 4% and if I don't like it that it's not a huge thing. they'll try something else.
-
Suz, I went through a similar process and when I had expanders exxhanged for permanent implants there were no drains. I am concerned he has been filling your expanders while you were not yet healed enough from mastectomy and this could have contributed to your troubles. Like others have said go to another PS for a second opinion, even if the situation with drains is resolved.
-
I zleady had implants prior to surgery so I was filled almost to capacity at mastectomy, since I already had been stretched out from having implants for 10 years.
sometimes expansion will fill in gaps where fluids can accumulate. that's what was explained to me, anyway.
-
Honestly suz I think it is very rare to have drains after the Exchange surgery (replacing the TEs with the implants). Drains are because, as you said, the body does not like empty spaces; so it sends fluid to fill empty spaces (like when they take breast tissue out, and even when he took out your original augmentation implants, during MX). When the doctor switches the TEs for implants, there shouldn't be any empty space -- it should be an even switch of TE size whatever to implant size whatever (and often they cram a bigger implant in there than the TE size). So no drains needed. It is a much less disruptive surgery than the BMX.
As far as the stamina: OMG I hear you. I had my BMX in July, my Exchange surgery in October, I broke my ankle, and then I ruptured a disc on January 22nd and had surgery to repair that on Feb 16th that they messed up; so I basically have barely moved since last July. I am getting better (next surgery is next Friday if this red spot near my foob goes away) but I have had some nights where I have cried with exhaustion. I don't have advice for you on this, other than taking walks one block farther each day. When do you have to go back to work?
-
so, I'm still all over the place. 30ml one day, 40ml the next, back down to 30, back up to 40. making me crazy.
this Wednesday will be 7 weeks post mastectomy. grrrrrr. and the incision where the tube goes in is getting kind of gross.
-
Define "gross".....? smelly, yellow, dischargy or red? That is an infection. You've been in this for seven weeks; at this point, I would get a second opinion at the NCI cancer center nearest you. Most insurance will pay for a second opinion; you can check with your carrier.
-
there's yellow on the gauze pad when I change it. I've been on antibiotics the whole time.
I'll be seeing my doc on Monday so I'll see what he says.
it's just been so long now. I asked if he's had anybody that just wouldn't stop and he said never. so o hope I'm not the first.
-
Which is why you should get a second opinion.....
-
I had my BMX on 5/16 and still have 2 of my 4 drains. Unfortunately I'm currently going through a bout of cellulitis and pseudomonas, so my ongoing drainage issues are likely related to that, but prior to the infection my drains have never gone lower than 45, usually between 50-60. I can't believe how long it's taken either! My PS office said they won't keep them in longer than 6 weeks.
My PS did suggest massaging the breast - starting in the middle (where the nipple used to be) and massaging away from it all the way around the breast, trying to push any fluid toward your drains. Do it multiple times a day. Good luck! I feel your pain!
-
40ml is not really a high output. Well not according to my surgeon. So grateful that he doesn't believe in leaving drains in for longer than a week due to the risk of infection. My surgery was on a Friday and the drain come out the following Friday morning. I only had one drain and had no problems with recovery though I didn't have reconstruction. Wishing you well.
-
I'm so jealous of that
but happy you don't have the drain game like this.I will take to him tomorrow at my appointment. and have a very honest conversation about it. he says this isnt unusual, but I haven't seen a lot of this going on this long from anybody on this board, unless there are other complications.
it is 20ml every morning, rain or shine. at night it's either 10, 15, or 20 depending on the day. and regardless of activity level.
-
he's taking it out no matter what on wednesday.
this morning it was only 10ml (and it doesn't look like much so far, but I have until 4 hours). he seems to thint I'll still have some collection and need to get it sucked out via syringe. but I hope not!!!!
god, let this be it.
-
Sweet sweet sweet relief!!!
Drain came out today, 7 weeks after the initial mastectomy, 3 weeks after the first drain was pulled.
my numbers were good the past 3 days. 30ml 30ml 30ml, then 10 this morning (early in the day).
Praying that fluid doesn't collect. Doc says he suspects it will, but hoping my body picks it up. if it does I will need to have it removed via syringe. really looking forward to that!!!
anyway, for today, this moment I almost feel completely normal. baby steps.
-
Yippee! Crossing my fingers for no accumulation!!

So glad for you suz2016.

Suz2016 Tomorrow makes 7 weeks that I had a unilateral mastectomy with latissimus dorsi reconstruction. The drain in my breast came out at 3 weeks, the drain in my back is still there. I am uncomfortable and annoyed. Nothing I do (or don't do) affects the output of the drain. It's still in the 60s. They told me they would pull the drain at 8 weeks regardless but now I'm afraid of what happens. I really need to go back to work so I can save my time off for the next surgery ( implant on the left and reduction and lift on the right). It's hot, its humid and I'm just plain miserable...... I just want to feel normal again. I am happy to see you had your drain pulled. I hope things continue in the right direction for you.
