Mr. 02143 had his bi-weekly burger craving tonight, so guess what we had? To accompany I made a pasta salad and vinegar cole slaw. Tomorrow I have several friends coming for lunch, so after dinner I began the prep to make Quiche Lorraine. The dough is resting. Bacon has been crisped. In the morning I will blind bake, shred the cheese and make the custard. I plan to serve with both a fruit and green salad. I really prefer fruit salad with no dressing, but I know lots of folks like something. Maybe I should do a honey-poppyseed dressing and let people add if they want. I had planned to make some baguettes, but that isn't happening. Good thing we can get some right at the bottom of the hill, freshly baked.
Bedo, you did produce a gorgeous child. Have fun at "camp." I suspect you will be working pretty hard. If you colleagues are great to work with, it could be a ton of fun.
Moon, that grand baby isn't a baby at all anymore! What fun she is having! Can't believe how quickly they grow.
I have no interest in a cold, summer, winter, fall or spring! We managed to get through this entire winter and Mr. 02143 didn't get even one! And he usually does. Strangely, the woman in the house with the suppressed immune system doesn't seem the catch these things. [knocking on some serious wood]

Had some tuna salad in a hollowed-out tomato, over mesclun greens dressed with a thrown-together lime-blueberry vinaigrette. That was lunch. Dinner was low-carb fettucine Bolognese: shiratake noodles boiled and tossed in some low-carb meat sauce with peppers, mushrooms and Parm. Reg. thrown in. Had an ounce or so of a 2010 Assisi Rosso. Yum!

Minus, I think I will have some internet, but not in my apartment and phone is iffy as we are way out there.But I hope to stay in touch.
For dinner last night I pigged out. First veggies, good, but then I got hungry about 9 and went out to our local tavern with a friend and had fried calamari and beer. Oh well.
No idea what's for dinner tonight.
As Susan, Lacey and the New Englanders know, it's Fall here again for some reason.
After spending a vacation in Maryland with a friend from 4th grade and moving, I am down to the basics. I found a recipe for Shakshuka at Whole Foods in their meals for four under $15 flyer. So that's what's for dinner. Basically eggs poached in tomato sauce with vegetables,spices and greens and/or feta if you wish
Camp will have a 25 item salad bar with each meal I was advised by the director. So I hope it is good.
Susan, I have not thought of Quiche in ages. What a good idea.. I'm thinking now of spider plants, Afghan dogs,shag rugs, and Charlies Angels. But knowing you, you have a delicious timeless recipe. I'm thinking of making an asparagus or broccoli one now. We have local fresh eggs. Unfortunately, I won't be doing it from scratch, lol

Last evening I attended a retirement dinner for an admin friend from my former school system who will be sorely missed. She is one of those people who has the system's total history logged in her brain, knew everyone in the system, got along with all...and was amazingly productive for 42 years! I would not want to be the next person who tries to fill that position! Anyway, the buffet dinner was pretty boring, salad, a sauced chicken, sliced beef, steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. The desserts were many but unremarkable...chocolate cake, chocolate cannolis, , an apple tarte, etc., etc. none were remarkable. But the event was nice and it was great to see so many of my former co- workers!
DH was in Stockbridge last evening and reported on the wonderful seafood risotto that he enjoyed there. Oh well, I enjoyed the social part of my night.
I am headed out to Stockbridge as soon as I get my suitcase packed. There is a formal-ish dinner for the man in whose estate we stay since he is leaving the Board. Boo hoo, since we assume he won't be putting us all up any longer. It was nice while it lasted for all these years! I'm anticipating a very nice dinner tonight!

Just saw some of your posts about the BCO sisters concert in Hickory. Sorry you could not join us, but it was great! ChiSandy played and sang for almost 3 hours- she is a wonderful musician/singer/songwriter! We raised a nice tidy sum for the Healing Touch program in Hickory. It really was a good time! Will let you know if we do this again and will hope you can join us. Hugs to all.

No dinner tonight--I can’t sing well on too full a stomach (impairs breath support and makes me too satisfied and complacent-- the hunger sort of boosts my adrenaline). Maybe a light salad and a couple of strawberries for late lunch. Had a big (for me) breakfast of a fried egg, a slice of bacon, and a piece of low-carb/high-fiber toast with black coffee. That’ll keep me going till at least 3, if not 4 pm.

So everyone was going to a local greasy spoon after the show last night--I’d have had to cheat majorly on my diet. as well as walk three long blocks with a guitar on my back and a bag of CDs. I Uber-ed it home and threw together a tapas platter: chorizo, jamon Iberico & Serrano, speck, olives, spiced Brussels sprouts & pickled cauliflower, smoked Marcona almonds and a slice each of Iberico, Tipsy Goat and Manchego cheeses. Washed down with an ounce of chiiled manzanilla (dry) sherry and a couple of ounces of rioja.

Dinner tonight was leftover short rib, shredded and made into soft tacos with avocado, with refashioned brown rice and salsa, and some refritos with a bit of cheese on top.

Dinner was 4 small slices of California roll with Rothchild's Lemon Wasabi sauce. Next course was two ears of fresh corn sliced off the cob smothered in butter. Third course was a piece of Lemon pound cake that had been sitting on the cupboard for 8 days (the rest went into the disposal). All of this was washed down by a nice Malbec. Tomorrow will be asparagus. I scored a really nice looking bunch for $1.50.

The fish was a surprise. Mr. 02143 stated as he grabbed the donation that it was thawed. Well, not in this lifetime! Once I realized this, I threw the large fillet into the freezer. The "chunks" were a tiny bit soft in one spot but not thawed. They could not be dinner last night. So, they were dinner tonight.
For lunch, I made up another fruit salad and warmed some of the leftover quiche. Then [after hours of coding and a nap] I cooked 1/2 a pork tenderloin which had been marinating in a mustard mixture. I also boiled some 'taters and mashed them with sufficient butter and milk. We jumped in the car and headed to the "condo" to deliver dinner. My poor daughter is covered in hives. They have now moved to her palms and feet, and have turned into blisters. She has seen doctors, and now, they think she has a viral infection. She should see a dermatologist on Monday. She simply can't stand on her feet at all. And she needs to eat decent food! So, I deliver.
I came home and started on our dinner. Created a soy & sesame marinade for the fish chunks. Started some Jasmine rice. Grilled the fish, and dinner was served. I had planned to make dry-fried green beans, but I ran out of energy. So fish and rice it was! I then baked off some of the quiche crust scraps and Mr. 02143 is eating them with the local strawberries he bought at the Farmer's Market today.
Tomorrow is Sunday so that means pancakes. It just never ends.

Brunch was a 2-egg omelet made with diced red & green peppers, red onion, and about a Tbs. of minced chorizo, with sliced cucumber on the side. Dinner was a small insalata caprese over mesclun greens, with a lemon-lime vinaigrette. Washed it down with seltzer as I sat on the deck watching the sunset and listening to the birds (robins, finches, mockingbird & cardinal). Dessert was a ripe peach. Bob is coming home late (10-11-ish) and the last place I want to go is the only place open that late--Fireside Inn. Their food is kind of heavy & clunky, with very strange takes on stuff like “BBQ shrimp" or “gumbo." Their steaks, fish & chips & Cajun meatloaf are very good, but the only one of those I can eat is the steak--and no offense to them, if I'm gonna have to limit red meat I want it to be either grass-fed, prime or both. I can eat their Buffalo wings (not breaded, thank goodness), but meh. So I'm defrosting some salmon. Bob asked me to chill a white wine but yesterday pronounced the Trinitas Chardonnay I chilled “too good to drink." (I keep telling him I can Coravin it and pour him as much or as little as he wants without having to kill off the bottle, but I suspect he prefers to kill off a bottle). Searching the basement, I found (to my chagrin) a 2000 Frog's Leap Dry Rose of Pinot Noir. Winced, brought it upstairs, Coravin-ed about a Tbsp. and was shocked to find it still rather drinkable--in fact, well-chilled I think it'll taste better and less oxidized than that manzanilla sherry. If Bob likes it, he's welcome to the whole bottle. I'd rather have a flute of the Mumm Napa Santana brut I'm also chilling.

The night before, Thai at a tiny restaurant. Spring rolls and beer. It seems stress+ no work=beer with dinner. Oh well, 7 healthy weeks in the woods should work off any weight gained.

Except for wonderful appetizers at the cocktail hour, the dinner food at the beautiful estate in West Barrington was unspecial....pretty similar to that offered at the retirement dinner on Thursday. Steak, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable. However, the vegetable on our plates was bizarre.....a piece of dark cauliflower sitting in a brownish "smear" which evoked many questions/comments. So much for food.... The company, conversations and settings were all wonderful.
So we raced home on Saturday evening, and got up Sunday to hear a lyceum lecture by a church member who works for Homeland Security in Human Trafficking. He focused on American teenagers who are lured into these situations, and it was so frightening, especially to hear of ways kids are cyber lured. It was also appalling to learn about why the consequences for "johns" are not very deterring....too many men in power, in charge of altering those sanctions, who have a vested interest in remaining anonymous and keeping these young sex slaves "available". So troubling! Anyway, in some small concrete ways, our church members will be starting a team to support victims who are escaping such lives. I plan to join the new team.
On a happier note, we spent the rest of the day with DS2 and DGF, enjoying a neighborhood tour of beautiful restored victorian homes in the Ashmont Hill section of Dorchester. Fascinating and fun....and many stairs!
After, we retreated to their condo where we enjoyed drinks and chips and dips on their newly decorated roof deck (DGF definitely has the design gene
, where DS2 grilled shrimp/chicken/vegetable kebobs. They were accompanied by a fresh grilled corn relish, and an arugula salad with grilled peach, goat cheese and balsamic dressing. It was a delicious meal! DGF made a birthday key lime pie for me, which she had trouble slicing, but we had noooo trouble eating...we just relabeled it 'key lime crumble'! It was a really nice day....
Am missing hearing about your northern adventures, Carole. Hope all is going well...
Susan, I do hope that your DD is finding some relief from the hive eruptions. What a scourge! I'm glad she is getting nurtured by your nutritious deliveries and emotional support. Hopefully a good allergist can be added to the mix

Susan, im so sorry about your DD. I had hives after my 2nd child. It was a reaction from tylenol3. Codiene. I do know what she is going tbrough. Ouch. I hope they can help her quickly.
Had Chinese with my DH. Not feeling like cooking. The stupid stone makesitself felta couple of times a day but mot too much. My cold is finally getting better.

I've been keeping up with reading posts but replies have all been mental. We are enjoying the temperatures here in northern MN. The first week our attire was jeans and sweatshirts. It has warmed up but the a/c has not been needed except for one afternoon. Today was/is gorgeous with high in the upper 70's. We biked 20 miles and then had a tasty lunch at Dorset House in the small village of Dorset. I had a grilled cheese on sour dough bread. In addition to gooey cheese the filling included fresh tomato and thin-sliced pickles. DH had a BLT that he proclaimed delicious. Dorset House is also an ice cream place with many selections. I had a chocolate ice cream soda and dh had a hot fudge sundae with Moose Tracks ice cream, his favorite.
Afterwards we shopped for groceries at Hugh's Family Market, which is a nice supermarket. It offers a variety of store-made brats, brats being a popular meat choice here. I selected Minnesota brats which contain blueberries and maple flavoring.
After all the calories at lunch, dinner will be a sandwich or some cottage cheese or yogurt.

For dinner tonight I pan browned a pork loin dusted with flour and corn starch. I then put it in the oven at 350* for 1 hour. Removed it from the oven drizzled my k-up, honey and garlic sauce over the top and back in the over for another 15 mins. Along with the pork loin I baked a full cauliflower head drizzed with butter, and Monterey steak spices for 1 hour at 350* it was very yummy and my DH and DSIL's favorite!

Dinner at the 02143 household was some Merguez sausage, saffron bulgur made with homemade chicken stock, and then a haricot vert concoction. I mixed two tablespoons of chicken stock with equal amounts of harissa. I sautéed some onions, added the blanched beans over very hot heat. When the beans were just starting to brown, I threw on the chicken stock mixture and cooked until it thickened. This was rather Sarma inspired. Of course, they would have smothered it in something with tahini or some other high fat topping. It was actually quite delicious.
Moon, I can't believe you are still in kidney pain. At what point do they do something to help you out? Can't they zap those stones?
Lori, I haven't made a pork loin in forever. They are just too big for two people. I get too tired of the leftovers by meal 3. And, the kids will only eat one meal of pork. Disappointing isn't it?

Susan: But the pork loins freeze beautifully after they're cooked. I cook them for myself regularly. It they're the full loin, I usually cut in thirds & freeze 2 pieces. For the small center loins that come in two packs here, I season each one differently and cut in 4 pieces - freezing 3.
Hi to everyone else. Computer not happening tonight since my air conditioner went out at noon. It's only 93 outside, but VERY humid. And the night won't cool down lower than 79 so no way to open the windows.

Hectic week here. Dad is being released from rehab Friday -- most likely to a nursing home. He's had quite a lot of up and down due to medication issues. He's now much better but not hearty enough for supportive living. It remains to be seen if he ever will be. The whole thing has been very upsetting to both of us. I have a lot of arrangements to make before Friday.
To add to my frustration, my phone started misbehaving to the extent that it had to be replaced. I hate setting up a new phone. It's as bad as setting up a new computer. A whole day I'll never get back.
Carole, I envy your cool temps. We've had 95 plus degree days for ten days and no real end in sight. In addition, we've had no rain for 3 weeks. Way too early for this August like pattern. I'm afraid the tiny little green beans on the plants will wither away if it doesn't rain soon. It's even too hot and dry for the weeds to grow.
Tonight is a grilled flatiron steak and corn on the cob, neither of which heat up the kitchen.

Nuked some buffalo wings, cut up celery, and mixed some bleu d’Auvergne into generic blue cheese dressing. Too tired to do anything more complex, too afraid to sabotage my low-carb diet either. Walked to the Immediate Care Center earlier, to get the skin biopsy dressing on my back changed (I can’t reach it, am not allowed to try, and nobody’s home who can do it for me). The nurse there told me it looks infected. Now I’m waiting for my derm’s on-call doc to get back to me. Going on an hour now, no callback. I’m getting really tired of doctors not returning my calls. This morning, I got a call from my LE doc’s scheduler asking if I still wanted to make an appt. I told her that I had requested the appt. three weeks ago, and saw her boss last week. I am losing patience with apathy and incompetence.

DH is in San Diego for work so I have not been cooking. Yesterday I made a green salad with some rotisserie chicken on top and vegan ranch dressing. Not very inspired. DD is back so maybe I will cook tonight - I am meeting a BCO friend for lunch.

susan - hoping your DD gets the hives under control asap - I am very prone to that type of reaction and I know it is miserable. Having a newborn and not enough sleep has to be making it even harder, but she will get through it. I don't remember if you said they have her on an antihistamine.
moon - what is the kidney stone plan? It seems somewhat merciless to just leave you there trying to pass stones. Glad the cold is on the wane.
auntie - bummer for you and dad - has he come around to realizing that you are on the same team? Wasn't he struggling with that earlier?
chisandy - I hate those dressings on the back! I had three wide excisions for skin cancer right in the middle of my upper back, one after the other - two weeks apart from each other, so six weeks of trying to dress stuff where I can't reach. My DH is always gone so I actually purchased a pair of reptile tweezers that are about a foot long, could set up the dressing, then pick it up with the tweezers, hold the dressing and look backward in the mirror, then back up to the wall so it stuck. Ridiculous, but it worked. Your way sounds a lot easier. Wish your health care peeps would call you back - it is frustrating. I was surprised yesterday - called my PS to let her office know I had a bleeding UTI over the weekend and check if she was satisfied with the meds I was put on by urgent care since I had surgery with foreign bodies implanted less than a month ago. They called back in less than 5 mins, and I am on the right med, so yay!

ChiSandy, I hope you got some response from your docs. So frustrating....and scary to know an infection needs attention, but no one is listening.
And Nance, my thoughts have been with you as you cope with your dad's failing health...especially after his situation was looking more promising. No matter which stage of life we are in, this is always so very hard. Hugs to all of you. I know you must also be physically as well as emotionally exhausted.
Last night we went to Tasca in Allston, a favorite tapas restaurant of our friends who were back from California for a visit. We had many delicious tapas, a special deal on red sangria, and some sweeeeet desserts! It was great seeing these friends in a place that holds such good memories. So we got to make more!
Special, have you considered making an instructional video for self back dressing changing?? You continue to amaze!!
Dinner on my own tonight, so maybe leftovers DS2 sent home with me....and salad.
My thoughts are with my DS1's family today. DDIL's dad (who lives with them, does childcare, and is sooo close to my little grandson) is having lung cancer surgery at Sloan-Kettering. During recent pneumonia treatment, a large tumor was discovered, and now a lot of questionable scarring in his lungs, (noticed by S-K, not by his first pulmonologist, which has my DDIL surgeon crazed), so diagnosis is not clear, but not probably great. We are worried for him and all of them, but will hopefully have more facts after today.

Special, the image of the reptile tweezers, the dressings and backing up to the wall..gave me a huge laugh. I could just see alternating their use between dressings and their intended use. :-)
The trifle looks good. Is is "calorie laden"? :-) DD here likes non-cake stuff for her birthdays. Is there a recipe or general "do it sort of like this" notes?
My heart goes out to you Nance..you and your dad. I would imagine it is equally unsettling to him as well. I still remember my dad's...not sure what to call it....amazement, I guess....amazement and irritation....that his body would no longer do what he wanted. It bothered him greatly. When I'm doing stuff for my mom, I try to keep in mind that my mom probably *HATES* the situation.
Carole, I wish it was in the 70s here. This weekend it's very likely to reach 120F degrees with low temperatures in the low 90F degree range. The 120F heat is dry--kind of like standing in front of an oven--but the early morning temperatures are more humid than I like.
And, Minus, I hope the A/C gets fixed QUICKLY. The high heat and high humidity is tolerable if you can go inside to cool off..but if you need to cool off and you are already inside....uggh.... :-)
Chi, I hate the "constant forgetfulness" too. That is probably a problem with the office staff, but from a patient point of view, the office staff and the providers all blur together. I hate getting a new doc. It seems I find one that is a decent person and has a good staff...and they move or retire...so I have to go through the "try one, be bothered by the experience, try another" until I settle on a new doc...and then they move or retire.....
Moon, I agree with Susan, can't they "zap" the stones? I would think after a few days they would offer more than "this, too, shall pass" as a treatment.
The pork loin looks good Lori. The store here sometimes has a pair of them on sale for under a dollar a pound (!)..but it back to "regular price" if you have the meat department cut them up...Mom gave me a meat saw....so I cut them up into multiple "2 pounders" and freeze what I'm not going to immediately use. I've been experimenting with garlic rubs, rosemary rubs and pepper rubs and we can't decide which is better . II suppose when DD heads off into the world, I have to cut the loins into smaller pieces...so we don't get pork fatigue after the "20th meal of leftovers".
Doctor visit today for me. Blood pressure is OK but still not as low as the doctor would like and I'll find out about the cholesterol numbers tomorrow. Even with all my exercise, my cholesterol numbers aren't that great. When I know the cholesterol check is going to happen, I take my exercise watch (shows max and average heart rate, date, time and length of exercise session) with me to show the doctor. The doctor, as he clicks through the exercise readouts, raises his eyebrows a bit (he says my cardio workouts are on the extreme end of crazy high). Anyway, when the results show up, he says as long as I keep up my exercise, he's not going to recommend any cholesterol lowering pills.
