Anybody do FEC chemo and NOT lose their teeth?????
Hi, I have been reading about tooth loss whilst on FEC and was wondering if anybody had anything to say about this. My teeth are THE thing that will finish me off big time. Hair I can manage with...but teeth are a NO NO.
I was not told anything about this as being a side effect. Has anybody done FEC and had no probs with teeth afterwards?

Dolly, I had FEC-D and didn't lose my teeth, I didn't even know it was a side effect. You get mouth sores and sensitive gums (as with most chemo regimens), and might lose nails but never heard of tooth loss. And I didn't lose nails either, just got some brittle finger nails and toe nails remained intact.

Thanks Eren, that has calmed me down massively...

Hi Dolly. Sorry you have to go through FEC. Want to remind you to schedule a dental appointment as important to do prior to chemo. Good luck with it all! - Claire

Hi Claire,
I did not go to dentist before starting chemo. I had however just been to the dentist about a month before diagnosis and so am assuming I am OK teeth wise. I have purchased a good toothpaste with a very high flouride content in it. I am using it every day and also using salt water as mouth wash and have gengigel in the event of any mouth sores appearing.
Is FEC a particularly bad chemo Claire? I have been surprised so far at my lack of SEs and actually have been wondering whether they forgot to give me the chemo last week.

Have read about many people doing FEC and nothing about teeth SE. I also did it, no issue. Never have been told about that being a SE.

Hi Dolly, I had AC+T so the good news is that you will be done much sooner than I was! EC is almost identical to AC, and I can say that I felt "odd" as opposed to being really down. You do get more tired as time goes on. That said, I would describe it as "dialing things down a bit".
So count your blessings that all is just fine so far. I was so relieved after the first round as knew I would be just fine. And I was. - Claire

Thanks Karen,
That's what I want to hear. The teeth going would really be the absolute final insult for me!!!

Claire,
That's great to hear that things are perhaps NOT going to get any worse. I was told in hospital by the chemo nurse that the first round and how you react to it, is pretty much the patter for all the rest. Jeeeez if that is true, then I am really going to be a lucky girl. I do understand though that I will be bubbling over hair soon and that certain wee things will get worse, like tiredness. I have however started to exercise madly. Out walking every day and about to start yoga classes. I am off work at the moment as I am a teacher and Oncologist thought it best I stay away from any chance of infections. As a result I am sort of bored and there is only so much TV a girl can watch. This is why I have started to exercise and it will do me some good!
I am actually going to have to go on a diet as have been eating just as normal and of course steroid in my infusion is likely to add to weight. I had truly thought I might have at least have ONE benefit from this BC malarky, and maybe lose weight....no such luck!

Dolly.... I did not gain weight from chemo. I lost a few pounds which was just fine. Congrats on the exercising. Important to keep your core fitness as much as possible. I also exercised throughout the 12 rounds of chemo.
I think that exercising was one of the reasons I had a relatively easy trip through. Yes, I lost my hair, but I was overdue for an image update. Agree on the protein. Because you don't have energy reserves. All this comes back.
Stay hydrated and keep up the exercise. It will all be over soon. - Claire

Thanks Girls,
This has really helped. I will take your advice Kayb and certainly use the bicarbonate soda mouthwash given to me by the hospital. I have also upped my protein too. I had read a few weeks back that you need a certain amount for your body weight and so I got the calculator out and have been trying to take that amount. I have been eating lots of fish, steak (never eat this normally) and chicken. Also fruits too. All in all I am eating the best I can to try to build up cells. . I have been surprised at the lack of SEs so far. But I am most certainly NOT complaining!!
I am so glad you both got through your chemos well. I also thank you for taking the time to answer this thread and reassure me.

Three doses of docetaxal then three doses of FEC is standard bc chemo here. Because I'm HER2+, I also had Herceptin with the docetaxal and am continuing it through October. I had the dentist check and clean my teeth before surgery then after chemo. I did the baking soda/salt mouth rinses, and instead of dental floss, used softer silicon "toothpick-like thingies". Although I got unlucky with a zillion other side effects, chemo had no effect on my teeth. Hope this gives you some peace of mind :

hi, I finished the FEC-D on April 19, no teeth problems at all. They are all still strong and in my mouth as they should be.
As for the chemotherapy and side effects, it is cumulative but I did not find it to be horrible they so. Every cycle my first week would be a bit rough ( mostly fatigue and aches), by my second week I would be almost myself and my third week I would be myself. Then I would go back!

Hi - I too did FEC and have never heard of anyone losing their teeth. None for me, at all. sounds like you are doing super well!
