"A Cancer in the Family - Take Control of Your Genetic Inheritance" by Theodora Ross, MD., Ph.D; 2016

This is a MUST READ for anyone who is considering genetic testing or has recently found out they have genetic risk for cancer! It helped me come to grips with my risk, inspired me to act and made me cry tears of joy at a time when all I thought I could do was cry in anger and grief.

This is a brand new publication, written by a genetic researcher & cancer survivor who understands what you and your family are going through! She explains complex concepts in laymans terms! She inspires us to take control of our genetic risk and put our knowledge to good use!

There is a podcast interview in the linked thread. Listen to it before you buy the book. She explains so much and you will get a feel of her direct yet compassionate style.

Momof6littles, I hope you find it as helpful and as uplifting as I did. It really helped me pluck up the courage to talk candidly to my family. Their response has been amazing.

They have agreed to get genetically tested too so we will know which side of the family our cancer risk is from. From there, we will approach the rest of those affected to warn them of their risk and extend the potentially life saving knowledge to our extended family.

Good luck in your journey. I am on the road to recovery now. I'm currently cancer free and healing. Within the year my reconstruction process will be done. My life will fall into a new normal and I will sleep easier knowing that my risk for developing BC is lower than it has ever been in my entire life. What a gift, this knowledge is!

PS. I'm a Hoosier too! Transplanted to Texas for a job! I miss Indiana seasons!

Agreed! Thanks for the bump, great idea!

This book helped me recognize the gift I was given by learning my genetic risk and to not be afraid.

Yes! The fear associated with genetic testing. The fear and confusion associated with either a positive or negative. The family members in denial. So many great topics plus her own personal experience. She totally gets it

Also, if you read the book and enjoy it/find it helpful, consider writing a review for it on Amazon. It is helpful to others faced with trying to understand their family history of cancer.
