Anti-sickness meds

I start chemo in a couple of weeks. I am worried about being given steroids as I am type 1 diabetic and am aware that these can mess very seriously with my pretty perfect sugar levels. My questions are:

1. Do people on chemo always have to be given steroids? (I have been told that they don't have anything to do with the effectiveness of the chemo but are just to stop you being sick)

2. What can be given instead?

3. Has anyone ever refused steroids?

I would talk to your MO. He should be aware of your diabetes and may believe the use of steroids outweigh the risks. Steroids are what keeps us from being sick from the chemo like many past patients used to get. I don't imagine sickness would help your blood sugars either but I don't have experience with diabetes. The best person to ask is your MO

    Hey Karen,

I did a steroid in my infusion ONLY and took two anti-sickness tabs on following day and that was it! The steroids totally did mess with my glucose levels and so I am glad I asked to not have them home with me.

I am hoping this chemo treatment is going to be the pattern for all the rest as it has not been THAT bad. I mean I can think of nicer things to do...but it is nowhere near as bad as I thought.!
