MRI guided biopsy

Hi. On May 24, 2016 I joined the breast cancer club. Not one I necessarily wanted to join but God saw things differently. I'm 43 and have 4 young kids plus I own a daycare. Breast cancer was not on my to do list. I am lucky though. I caught it early. I have a small tumor in my left breast. I've been diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. I also have lobular carcinoma in situ. I'm waiting on the results back from the genetic testing. I also had a MRI last week. They found an additional tumor about 2 inches away from the first one. It's obviously very small. But this new found invader(tumor) makes me eligible for another MRI. Only this one sounds rather bar barbarrek . I get to be in the downward dog yoga pose while they squash the already soar breast while the deafeningly loud MRI takes images and they stab me with a needle that shoots lightening pain into my chest and they become zombies and rip out the chunk of skin. All of this happens while I'm wide awake. Has anyone ever had this biopsy done? Is it horrible? And if this comes back as cancer does this change my stage or my treatments? Thanks for the help

Mom, I had an MRI guided biopsy and it's not really that bad. Just make sure you are comfy before they start as you have to be completely still during the entire process. It took them a bit to get me into the right position on the machine so they could locate the correct area, but after that the process seemed to go rather quickly. I had lidocaine to numb the breast, so I didn't even feel a thing when they took the biopsy samples. Good luck....you'll do just fine

Thats good to hear. The first biopsy stung. They took 3 pieces. The first one was ok the second one stung and the third one was a little soar. I think this next one has compressions doesn't it

Mom....I had a MRI guided biopsy. It really wasn't bad but I took a small dose of Ativan which I would suggest. Also try to remember that there are a lot of false negatives on MRIs. Good luck and keep us posted.

Mom - I also had an MRI guided biopsy - both breasts at the same time!

There is no compression for the test - your breasts are hanging down through a figure eight type thing. It is not as bad as you might think, and it's over pretty quickly. Also, your head is not inside the tube, which helps with the noise. I watched an animated video of what the procedure would be like - which really helped.

Mom -- I had an MRI guided biopsy, too. It was fine -- I was sore for a few days and took Tylenol and iced the area every 4-6 hours. I also had huge bruising by the end of the week that looked horrible, but it actually healed pretty fast and looked worse than it felt.

My only regret was that I went to the biopsy alone, and really could have used a family member, or close friend to be there with me. I drove home very sore, but a ride home would have been better - I didnt want to inconvenience anyone, but afterwards just about everyone said they would have gone with me. Make sure you take someone with you!!!

I'm so glad to hear it's not with compressions. That must have been a different test I was thinking of.

I wasn't going to bring anyone with me. My husband said he would but I didn't want him to take any time off. I may need him later. The first biopsy wasn't too horrible. Is this one worse then the original one

ok so that was awful. Yes I did have compressions. Yes, that in itself hurt like a mad man. I was twisted into a position that my arm was numb. The spot that had to biopsy was attached to the chest wall and was so far back that they weren't sure they could do it at all. So because of that they needed to compress ten times worse then normal. And they had to reposition a million times. Then you are stuck there for 45 min. When they did the lidocaine I was so unamused. Normally my humor can get me through anything but I lost my humor. I was singing "Sesame Street" as loud as I could (don't judge ). I am not a good singer so I should probably appologize. I was hurting so much that I couldn't stop shaking and my teeth were chattering for a good 30-60 min after. Apparently Sesame Strret and Parkinson'sis how my body responds to pain and stress. Don't think I will volunteer for that again

Mom2four, so sorry you had a bad experience. It's so hard to know how our bodies will react to all of the tests we have to go through. But look on the bright side, the MRI is done and overwith.....treat yourself to something you enjoy--you deserve it!

huskerfan, that is so true. Each of us are different and have different experiences. I think mine was so uncomfortable because of the location and my breast was already hurting.I'm so glad it's over. And at least the pain goes away as soon as it's over. I can't really complain. I'm one of the lucky ones. I'm so early and my spots are small. I will never complain.

Mom2four, I'm sorry your biopsy ended up being such a bad experience. My MRI biopsy was pretty awful too, hard locations, multiple areas to biopsy. Honestly, how rough that MRI biopsy was, was what tipped me from doing a uni-mastectomy to a double. I did not want to have to ever do that again if I didn't have to. I hope you get your pathology results soon.

k cat, I am thinking of doing the same thing. But I don't think my insurance will let me. I have to be at a higher risk then stage 1 for it to be covered. But man, I never need to do that biopsy again
