newly diagnosed, have a question

Hi everybody.  My journey started a year ago with a call back on my mamo.  That was for a small cyst like lesion, had spot magnification and US.  The radiologist said we'll just check again in 6 months with spot magnification and US.  First 6 month follow-up, no change.  Went back a couple of weeks ago for next check.  My doctor's office called me back and said results were unchanged, so come back in 6 months.  Then, I receive the report from the hospital that says I need to come back for spot mag again?  Call the hospital to ask what the heck, my doctor told me I'm good to go?!  Well turns out that whoever looked over my report at my doctors office wasn't paying close attention and assumed it was talking about the previous spot and wasn't anything to worry about.  NOT!  The radiologist saw very small calcifications that he wanted a more magnified view of.  So being a little ticked off at my doctors office, I went and had the new views.  The radiologist recommended a biopsy Scared  So I went from being relieved to being scared s***less within two days.  Had a stereotactic biopsy on the 24th.  DCIS diagnosed.  Today had appointment with surgeon and got a copy of my pathology report.  The question I have is that in the interpretation part of the report it says... "High Grade ductal carcinoma in situ is present in all four blocks of tissue and focally there are small clusters of DCIS cells which may represent extension into lobules.  No invasion is definitively identified; however, through examination of the excisional specimen will be required to exclude this possibility."  So how would that change my diagnosis if it has extended into lobules?  I haven't learned all the abbreviations for stuff yet, so sorry about the long post Smile   Now that I know about the DCIS, I have been weirdly calm about it all.  I have a mastectomy scheduled for next Tuesday the 7th.  From the get go I knew that was the only way I could have any piece of mind in the coming years.  I even asked about a bilateral, but decided not to explore that further right now.  I have such a busy month coming up with out of town visitors and a family reunion at the end of the month.  So say a prayer for me that I'll heal quickly with no complications so I can enjoy some time with family,  some of whom I haven't seen for 30 years or more!!  Thanks for being here

Holy Smokes. Thank goodness your radiologist was on the ball. I know very few who have had surgical complications so I'm sure you'll be fine. I pray for a full and rapid recovery. Enjoy your summer and keep us posted.

I'm sorry about your Dx but glad it was caught early. Many positive thoughts for your upcoming surgery and for a speedy recovery. My surgery is on 6/10 and I'm anxious to get it behind me.

    Sending you good thoughts!

To answer your question, the lobules are where the ducts originate - the lobules produce milk which is carried by the ducts. So for the DCIS to have extended into the lobules just mean it traveled backwards through the ducts into the lobules (cancerization of the lobules). As long as it hasn’t actually broken through the ducts or lobules into the surrounding breast tissue, it is still considered in situ and your prognosis would not be affected.

Thank you so much Annette47!  I didn't get that question in my head until after it was too late to call the doctor, lol.  I was making it out to be a lot scarier.  You put my mind at ease Happy

Hey Girls, well I'm back after 2 years. I was diognosed in June2014 IDC left breast 4 mm very small I had lumpectomy and radiation. In April 2016 I was diagnosed with DCIS in right breast had a stereotactic biopsy then lumpectomy. My head is spinning I wasn't this anxious 2 yrs ago. My surgeon said radiation. I don't know what to do. So far no nodes are involved I'm concerning DMX but I'm scared. I know way to much about it my sister had it done Please someone help me through this. I know it has to be my choice my surgeon says the fact they are watching me do close is why he is comfortable with radiation

Hi Susug.  I'm totally new to all this so I'm not one to give advice.  Maybe you should start a new post with your concerns?  I don't know how many will catch your comment on this post.  So sorry you're having to go through all this for a second time.  Best wishes in whatever you decide.
