hello

I'm 22 years old and found a small lump about three weeks ago, after keeping it to myself I finally plucked up the courage to go and see the doctor who sent me off to have a mammogram. That was done last week. I passed out in work yesterday and having been nagged at by the boyfriend I went off to the hospital. Was greeted by the most unhelpful doctor In the world, I explained I was awaiting results and hadn't heard anything back, to be honest I assumed it was all okay, big mistake! He came back with a clip board and said it could be DCIS or LCIS but noone really knows!

I'm so confused & feel really alone my boyfriend has gone weird on me and my family have so much issues of their own they don't need me damping the parades. I'm hoping to gain a little bit of help here.

    Hi Laura_Mary4:

My understanding is that you have only had a mammogram to date, and have not yet had a biopsy. Please correct me if that is not right.

Please note that it is not possible to conclude from a mammogram alone that LCIS or DCIS is present. Imaging can raise suspicion to a certain point, where a biopsy is recommended. The tissue from a biopsy is examined by a pathologist to determine definitively whether a lesion seen by mammogram is benign or not. Luckily, the large majority of biopsies do turn out to be benign.

Please contact the facility where you had the mammogram, and request a copy of the radiologist's full report (not a form letter or summary). The report will include a description of the observations, and a "Bi-rads score", which is a rough estimation of the risk of malignancy. It will also include the radiologist's recommendations.

Secondly, ask what are the recommended next steps, in view of the suspicious result on mammogram. Possibilities might include further imaging by ultrasound, a biopsy, and/or consultation with a breast surgeon.

You will find a lot of support and information here.

Also contact the doctor who ordered the tests, since he or she will have the results most likely.
