ASAP. PLEASE. I am scheduled to be seen at Mayo on June 6th for evaluation and treatment Mayo was ranked 3rd in US for Cancer Hospitals but now found that Mercy a Hospital in Des Moines was rated very high for Breast Cancer.im only 30 minutes from Mercy and Mayo is 5 hours away.

They said it was very small .5

Also my family doctor said I didn't even need to see an oncologist until after surgery. That a general surgery I house could do it

Now I can't decid if I should just stick close to home. Anybody have an advice for me???

Hi Hissyfit33, and you raise a good question. If your insurance permits, maybe consult with both until you feel you have a satisfactory feeling about everything, and course of treatment. Maybe good to compare to each other. Naturally, if you have you have specific treatments that require many visits, you may want to opt for the closer hospital. But, until you know, check out both if you can.

No harm in checking out both as the moderator’s suggested.

I had a very “standard” situation, so didn’t feel the need to travel, even though there are multiple University cancer centers about an hour away (we are equidistant between Philadelphia and New York). My breast surgeon is very well regarded and there was nothing complicated about my case so I felt ok without a second opinion. Had that not been the case, I would have gone elsewhere, but there is something to be said for not having to travel, especially if you end up needing radiation which for me was 5 days a week for 6 weeks.

I just had my BMX at Mayo on Thursday. I've had nothing but great care since my bc was found in April.

I just finished a clinical trial and treatment for DCIS at Mayo and couldn't be happier with the decision to seek a second opinion there. My local hospital choice gave me very limited options for treatment and Mayo offered many more choices. Perhaps you should see what your local options are and then go to Mayo if you are seeking something different. Please message me if you have any specific questions about DCIS care at Mayo Rochester.

I would totally stay local especially in an in situ case. You may not even have to have chemo. You are very lucky it was caught so early!
