Anyone dislike new pictures/graphics icons on each thread page?
Edited to add--This has turned into a discussion about what personal member information is shared/collected with the new Outbrain links/icons on each thread page and how this impacts users' privacy. Please read on, especially the later postings.
I am very disappointed that new pictures/graphics icons have been added near the top of each and every thread page on the BCO site. I've noticed that the links to "more information" have no correlation to any of the thread topics and that there is a often a strange mixture of unrelated topics that change with every page click we make. Many of these links to more information are not topics I want to be reminded of or topics I hope not to need information for. I have asked the moderators why they are on each page and was told posters they asked thought they were okay. I suggested they be removed to not waste the space on each page and possibly be moved elsewhere. Do these new pictures and icon links to more information really need to take over each page? Maybe it doesn't bother anyone else. What are your thoughts?
Edited to add: I noticed later that these ad links are even on notices of someone's passing. How inappropriate!!!

Honestly ? No, it doesn't bother me at all. For me, this would be sweating the small stuff.
-
I don't see them, so Ad Block is probably hiding them.
-
It bugs me. I really don't like it.
-
They kind of startle me. They seem distracting and out-of-place. I don't like where they are, between the original post and the replies. Didn't they used to be on the side, under the menu?
-
every click is $$
And I wouldnever presume to judge the size of anyone's stuff so sweat away.
-
I noticed later that these ad links are even on notices of someone's passing. How inappropriate!!! If they are there only to make money it makes it even worse!
-
I don't like it at all.
I understand the desire on the part of BC.org to promote other parts of their website and to try to generate income (from advertisers and from users of the board) however I don't think that making the Discussion Board less user-friendly is the way to do it.
When I click on "All Topics", I want to see the "All Topics" list, not a massive banner (taking up the entire screen) from BC.org telling me about what they think I might be interested in. By clicking "All Topics", I've already indicated exactly what I'm interested in.
When I read an OP's post, I scroll down to see the replies to the post; I'm not interested at that point in seeing yet another banner from BC.org telling me about the rest of their website.
I have Ad Block, so I suspect that I'm not even seeing a lot of the ads that are further disrupting board users.
The board is already difficult enough to navigate, with 80 forums (including 6 devoted to BC.org itself), some of which are duplicates, some of which have nothing to do with breast cancer, many of which are cover similar topics and could easily and logically be consolidated. These days if I read a thread and don't pay attention to the forum that it's in, many times I can never find the thread again - I check a few of the more obvious forums where it could be, and if I don't find it, I give up.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that making the Discussion Board harder to use is the way to generate more users or more dollars. It actually seems rather counter-productive.

I generally read the boards daily, so I flash by them with no interest....which I'm sure most do also

Dear Members,
We appreciate your feedback on the pictures. We are looking into moving this feature again, if it is that intrusive. "Outbrain" shares content from our organization only. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, it doesn't necessarily relate to the content that is being discussed in the thread, but it is not taking anyone off our site, or sharing your information.
Thanks for your constructive feedback,
The Mods

Unfortunately one cannot visit a single website without seeing ads - sometimes they're so annoying as they block content I'm trying to read. While I don't like ads in general, I think these are unobtrusive.

Thanks, moderators, for changing the feature. I just don't know what you're changing it to. How naïve I've been to think that this is a private place to discuss personal issues. Once it was pointed out to me that these are ads, I noticed that the links are "recommended by Outbrain" which is an advertising/marketing company using "behavioral targeting." What exactly is Outbrain doing with the personal information it collects from BCO?? How does this "behavioral targeting" fit with BCO?
-
While we're on the subject, I just hate that when I open the tab for Active Topics, it reads "ACTIVE BREAST CANCER" at the top of my screen. That's the opposite of the message I'm trying to put into my brain. Not sure why it couldn't say "ACTIVE TOPICS" or "ACTIVE BCO TOPICS."
-
ksusan, we aren't exactly sure what you are referencing . Does your screen look different than this?
-
I'm referring to the open tab for "Active Topics." It says "Active Breast Cancer Topics." On my phone and tablet this shortens to "Active Breast Cancer." See the second open tab at the top of the image:

I've been on this board for 7 years now. If you had had these ads popping up then I first started I doubt that I would have felt the same way about these boards. Sorry but I just think it is crass.
-
Beesie, so glad you checked in
-
I've just looked at the site without an Ad Block running. A site that served up unrequested diagrams of lymph nodes being radiated would have made me too upset to return. As it is, they make me queasy and pretty quickly. Ad Block back on for me.
-
I think the size of the notices is a bit awkward but since they promote content from the rest of the site I really don't mind them. I don't see them as ads or marketing, I guess. Just my .02 worth...
-
I find the placement of them very distracting. I find the thread I want, then am interrupted midway. It would be better placed where people are searching for topics or new information instead of where we are drilling down for the content.
-
Just wondering when these ads are moving or taken down. Last week it was posted they would be moved by days' end but now after several more days they are still there. They are totally inappropriate on individual pages like notices of someone's passing and not desired on all other pages as they most often have nothing to do with the thread topic being discussed. As others have commented they are obtrusive and out of place.
I would like information on exactly what Outbrain does on the BCO website. From looking online, Outbrain is marketing based on "behavioral targeting" and every click earns money. I don't want my "behavior" on this website to be targeted for anything!! I will not be "clicking" on any of those icons! We are here for medical, private, or support for a life changing issue and I feel it needs to remain our personal space and not used for marketing!!!!!
Am I under the naïve opinion that this site is supported by donation not by marketing!!????
-
ceanna, I totally agree with you. Will post more soon, including on outbrain.
-
One reason I completely deleted my profile. Outbrain gets nothing until you click on something, then it knows something about you. With your diagnosis and anything else public, they have that information also. You can only be anonymous by not providing any public information.
-
I really dislike the location of these icons.
-
First, I don't see any ads or any notices on individual pages. All I see is some photos (reduced from their initial size) up the top of the main page. This is because I take measures to stop as many abhorrent practices as possible such as website tracking, XSS (cross site scripting), browser fingerprinting, web bugs and many other creepy invasions of your privacy....and it's a constantly moving target.
If it matters to you, as a bare minimum I'd recommend installing something like the noscript extension (FF) but be warned, there's a steep learning curve. Default settings wont cut it and intelligent tweaking means putting in some serious spade work. What a shame we have to take these measures against wholesale profiling, spying and other such obnoxious schemes.
They are totally inappropriate on individual pages like notices of someone's passing
How long has this been instantiated? In light of privacy issues regarding someones passing being discussed in a recent thread (opting out of the angels list) my understanding is that the Mods would get back to us about this. I'm assuming that there's an update somewhere and that I've missed it even though I've looked for it?
I don't want my "behavior" on this website to be targeted for anything!! I will not be "clicking" on any of those icons! We are here for medical, private, or support for a life changing issue and I feel it needs to remain our personal space and not used for marketing!!!!!
Yes. Our medical details are considered by many to be private and sensitive information. Sadly, ongoing cat and mouse tactics make this nightmare much worse than most people realize. For example, it is a well known fact that you don't even have to click on some webpage embedded elements in order for certain 3rd party sites to know where you've been. Don't even get me started on Google FB twitter embedded elements.
As wikipedia says Outbrain indeed uses behavioural targeting method which is totally creepy. It has been known previously for less than desirable behaviour regarding spam. The question to be asked then, is when marketing giants change their behaviour amidst criticism, is that change genuine? All I can say is follow the money trail.Wikipedia:
Outbrain uses behavioral targeting to recommend articles, slideshows, blog posts, photos or videos to a reader, rather than relying on a more basic "related items" widget. The sites with the recommended articles pay Outbrain for this service, and Outbrain pays the site on which the links appear. -
musical, thanks for the info. The ads on the individual pages are still there and no further word from the moderators about when they are moving or being deleted. The questions I have posed here to the moderators have not been addressed yet either.
What are you using to block these ads? I hate the idea that all of us are being "used" here for marketing!!
Edited for typo.
-
Moderators: what's going on? You've pretty much heard most are not happy with the advertisements
-
The mods aren't the ones making the money from the ads. Rock/hard place. :-)
-
ceanna, I'm using noscript in FF plus some carefully chosen addons to nuke other nasties but in brief, there's a certain amount of overlap with all this. Much web content is heavily dependent on Javascript which also accounts for a large portion of under-the-hood sneakware/spyware, "legitimate" or not. As such, I have these blocked and I work on a default deny basis as is the case with my firewall. In other words I allow scripts as I see fit, and on an as needed basis. Sometimes that will break sites to varying degrees and if all I want to do is view text then I don't care.
If anyones interested I'll do a screengrab showing you a/what appears on a noscript menu at a top level when I first come here and b/ how that list further populates by (temporarily)allowing breastcancer.org
As I said, this is a constantly moving target and what worked yesterday in circumventing breaches in privacy may not work tomorrow.
I've just spent some time reviewing the privacy policy and TOU (terms of use) of this site. Quite frankly it reads no better than any typical site in the name of "improving their services to you" and which says we are supposed to read EVERYTIME we come to this site in case it's updated. All the best doing that every time you come here.
Can someone do a screenshot of what you guys are seeing. -
Personally, these ads don't bother me and I understand if BCO is either trying to spread information , monetise a page, or gather information. All sites and social media do this and you might as well disconnect the Internet as fight this fact.
-
Don't like the size or placement and I strongly disagree with the "explanation" that it helps people find "areas of interest" that they wouldn't find on their own. It is a money-making, marketing scheme, 100%, and imho.....nothing justifies having these adverts.
I'm not holding my breath for the mods/bco.org to remove them though, as despite a strong negative response to their past support of insensitive events like "Baubles for Boobs", and their promise to stop supporting these type of things, they currently list "Bocce for Boobs" as a recommended, approved way to support bc patients.
