Horrible Heartburn
Hello all, I had my 1st round of TC last Thursday. I know heartburn is a side effect, however Heartburn/reflux is something I struggle with normally so I take nexium daily as a preventive. Yesterday, I had heartburn in the middle of the day for which I took some tums and it went away. Earlier today, I had heartburn and a few tums helped after a bit. Tonight, is a different story. The pain from it is horrible. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do? Thanks so much !

Hi!
I got heartburn while on AC, and just took Tums. If the pain is that bad, you need to call your oncologist's office for advice. Most oncologists have doctors on call after hours. They can call in prescriptions, as needed. Hope you feel better soon!

My MO told me to take 2 of the 20 mg rabeprazole morning and evening. I also used pepto bismol as well for any breakout heartburn pain while on AC. Good luck with everything. I found this my most distressing SE though it did go away fairly soon after chemo and I was able to drop it eventually. I got the rabeprazole through a prescription.

I take medication every day but during the "heartburn" days I use liquid gaviscon or I'd be sleeping sitting up all night. I usually get a couple of days of bad heartburn every treatment.

Thanks Ladies. I'm definitely going to call my mo tomorrow to ask what else I can take as heartburn preventative. The heartburn I've had this evening has been by far the worst side effect I've experienced.
I appreciate your quick responses

karenC, I'm sending my husband out to get the gaviscon right now! Praying it works better than tums for me.
Thank you

I had such bad acid reflux and heartburn I felt like I had swallowed molten lava. It required heavy duty doses of nexium and another ppi from my MO to get relief. It took me a while after completion of treatment to get back to normal. Tell your MO or chemo nurse if your otc stuff doesn't help. Best wishes to you.

I was given Ranitidine(Zantac)to take post chemo. I think I took it 3x a day for 3 or 4 days. My MO said take it for the first few days regardless if I was having symptoms. Even though I was taking it I did have mild heartburn
