Great research for all women to read before deciding on surgery. See " Best Surgery for Early-Stage Disease May Depend on Age" on the front page of breastcancer.org.

Thanks for posting this. I was diagnosed at age 38 in 2007, and made my lump/rads decision with the data that was available then. I had a local recurrence last year at age 46, despite chemo and Tamoxifen. I was on the ten year Tamox plan and recurred while on it.

I have to say, I was very frightened by this study conclusion. Mastectomy provides a 12% reduction in absolute risk to women treated before they were 45, if I understand correctly. That is huge, especially considering, for instance, the very small benefit in AIs over Tamoxifen for hormone therapy.

To note, this study aggregate is from a group that was treated 86 - 98, and there is no indication of hormone treatment. As well, this aggregate includes all cancer types at early stage (I want to make sure I am reading right, so always provide that as a caveat in my posts).

I started another post on this "new study on mastectomy". I am curious to hear other's thoughts on whether young women (I was 39 at diagnosis) should now be considering going back for a double mastectomy. Certainly chest wall failure and other complications must factor, especially in a radiated breast, but I am thoroughly haunted. As the parent of a toddler, I want to do whatever I can to minimize my risk.
