Can breast cancer form within 6 months?

Hi.. I am currently at day 3 of waiting for my biopsy result. 6 months ago, I had my very first MRI which resulted in tiny spots (3-4mm in size) showing in couple areas of my right breast.. Monday I had my followup MRI. Result came out with 2.1cm lump in my right breast posterior superior medial very close to chest wall (different area compared to my first).

I am 30 years old with BRCA2 & family history. Due to my age, I am thinking this is just fibrosis or something benign. But I am still worried and nervous. I can't seem to find any articles or answers to my biggest question. If this turns out to be cancer, can cancer grow or form this fast? It's only been 6 months...

Any thoughts?

Not to alarm you, but there are plenty of women on this board whose cancer took awhile to show up on scans. Typically, however, they report that mammography has failed them, not MRIs. Remember that scans aren't perfect, and that scans may not pick up small tumors. Often, mammography doesn't work particularly well with dense breasts.

Since you've had MRIs both times, the mammography problem is absent in your case. In general, 30 year old women are much more likely to have benign breast conditions than cancer. However, there is that BRCA2 thing, so it sounds like your medical providers have done the right thing by biopsying the lump. No one can predict the results (hopefully B9), but it is possible that this 2.1 cm lump is cancer and was missed by the earlier scan.

    Hi ThirtyForever,

I was diagnosed with my first BC in early 2013, my second was found on my 1 year check in 2015. I go every 6 months to be checked. So my second BC developed between my 6 month check and my 1 year check. The second BC was different genetically from the first, it was a triple negative, or TN, which is a fast growing aggressive form of BC. I had surgery and chemo in 2015 and have passed my first 6 month check with flying colors! Your doctor should be able to give you more information on different types of BC. I was 46 when I was first diagnosed with no gene mutation and no family history so you can never assume because of your BRCA2 & family history that you will have cancer. Thinking about it won't help and will make you feel worse. Try to do something to take your mind off it, watch a favorite movie, listen to music or meet a friend for coffee or a meal. I wish you luck and if I can help with any questions you let me know. Smile

    Good luck with your studies!!!

    Dear ThirtyForever,

That is great news! You can never assume things based on family history. Now you can just continue with your regular checks and get on with enjoying your life!
