NEW JOB, don't need accommodations, do I have to tell had bc ?
Hello,
Just looking for some input. I just got the hire letter for a job. I don't have any upcoming medical appointments, all done with that. So I just found out that they want me to fill out a health history form as part of the hire process. I don't want to answer anything abot bc. I will get the questionaire tomorrow. I'll have to see what they ask.

macb04.....IMO you absolutely do NOT have to disclose your diagnosis and should not. Ive never heard of a health history form as part of the hiring process. Im not 100 percent sure but that sounds illegal. Maybe someone with more experience can answer that. Is is for your health insurance or life insurance policy maybe? Good luck and keep us posted. Its a very good subject to explore......

macb04, does the job you are applying for require a lot of physical effort or something? A questionnaire like this seems kind of odd, but I'm not in HR so can't comment on it's illegality.
I will say that if it IS legal, and you lie on it and they find out later there could be consequences.
You should be able to say you are cured and you don't require any accomodations. Sort of like breaking a leg. It heals and you are done. I'm not saying breast cancer is that way; I'm saying that's how you want to represent it to your future employer.

Mac,
You may want to search/ask cancerandcareers.org

Hello, just updating. Finally got the 3 page health history. No bc questions at all, PHEEWW. Just had 3 pages of questions about vaccine history, and health habits. I feel kind of silly, should just have waited to see what they asked. I am just so jumpy about all of this and a new job. Thank you to all for replying to me, makes me feel less on my own.

I would think it's SOP to reveal health issues on an app for health/life insurance. If you smoke you pay more than non-smokers or you have diabetes, etc., you will probably pay more and if you develop complications or medical problems from a condition and you didn't tell them they could deny your treatment costs.
Other than for health coverage I'm wondering if a company has the legal right to know your health history.

Thanks Diane for responding. I double checked and they don't need any info for the job, although you are right, I will have to tell the health insurance if they ask, although according to the ADA rules, they can't deny coverage for a preexisting condition.

Actually, that is not an ADA rule... that is a direct function of Obamacare. No one can be denied coverage based on medical history.
