bad news from US and mammogram

Radiologist said there was an area with multiple "suspicious' spots of calcifications on the mammogram, on the side of the left breast. He was also concerned about a dark spot on the ultrasound. Scheduled a biopsy for tomorrow.

I'm panicking - this pretty much sounds like cancer for sure, yes? Has anyone gone through this and ended up with false positives or a different (benign) diagnosis?

I'm 31 years old.

No. There's no reason to assume that it's cancer. "Suspicious" just means that there's a "something" that they want to check out. And many people have gone through this and ended up with a "not cancer" diagnosis.

You've perhaps seen this chart around. It's from the Imaginis site, which has additional info about the screening process:

On the above diagram, note that your goal is to fail to be advanced farther "up" the diagram. Each one is a narrower group of people. You'll notice that your calcifications were found during a routine screening mammogram, and your doctor referred you for a diagnostic workup--and then for a biopsy.

Of those who are sent on to biopsy (your category) 80% will be told their biopsy doesn't show cancer.

Of twenty women who are sent on for a diagnostic workup (like your ultrasound), five of them will be sent on for biopsy, but only one of those five will have a cancer diagnosis.

You're still going through well-woman screening at this point. As you work your way through the screening process, a very large majority are "tossed out" at every stage--including the stage you're at.

BTW, when reading on the BCO boards, it's easy to get a skewed version of your odds...the women who were "dropped out" of the diagnostic process don't continue to post here. So you have the people who were unlucky enough to advance all the way through the screening process who continue to post. And there's no reason to think that you will be here for very long either.

Hope you fail to advance in the diagnostic process very, very soon!
