Nails

I have read in numerous posts here about nails falling off during chemo. My questions are... was this painful? What type of shoes were you able to wear if you lost toenails? Is this a "common" thing with chemo? Did you cover your toes in some way? Maybe I'm vain, but if I lost toenails, I don't think I would be flashing my feet in sandals, yet I would think regular shoes would be painful. Can you shed some light?

Do you know what your regimen will be? Nail loss is usually a particular side effect of taxane drugs. I lost a pinky toenail (I iced during Taxotere and the rest of the nails were absolutely fine, but I think the pinky toe didn't stay cold enough) The new nail was right behind it, so it was not a problem. I can't offer any shoe advice since I did not lose any other toenails, and it is important to note that while this is a documented side effect it is not universal - many people have taxane chemo and do not have any nail issues. I iced because I wanted to minimize the possibility and have advised friends and members here to do the same.

I don't know what my regimen will be yet. I am scheduled to meet with my oncologist on May 13th to discuss/make a decision. But thank you, SpecialK for this advice. I've read about icing but I don't know if I could do it. I am so cold natured. I think I would freeze!

owens - I used bags of frozen peas and I dressed in layers. I also held ice chips in my mouth during the taxane infusion to keep from having mouth sores. It was not comfortable but I figured 45 minutes of cold was better than losing the nails. I know some people are too uncomfortable to keep it up - you would not be alone there! After I was done with that part of the infusion I had a warm drink. My center also kept blankets in a warmer, which was helpful.

I didn't ice and didn't lose any nails with taxotere.
