I went in for my oncologist appt yesterday, mammogram clear (ya!) but she did tell me that i have osteoporosis and was shocked at the degree that i have it. Im 42 and am a little shocked myself. I will be getting zoladex injections two times a year. i guess its a combo of chemo, ovary removal, tamoxifen and now arimdex. just wondering if any one else has experience with this and has any helpful tips :) i've also shrunk 2 inches! :(

thanks!

Sara

I had a total hyst/ooph and became osteopenic, but stable, nine years before breast cancer diagnosis. Hard to say if the lack of estrogen caused this as I also fit the physical profile for this. During that time I did try the oral meds but could not tolerate them due to a previous reflux surgery in '95. After chemo and six months of Femara I had a DEXA and was right at the osteoporosis measurement, so had definitely worsened. I get a Prolia injection every six months and after two years my DEXA showed density in the normal range. I don't have any side effects from the injection, but am advised to take vitamin D and calcium as well.

I was on Femara almost 3 year, making sure I took plenty of calcium and Vitamin D and getting weight-bearing exercise. I started treatment with a normal Dexa scan and was relieved to find it was still normal after 2 years of an AI. Then I had 2 small fractures and my PCP says I have osteoporosis no matter what the Dexa scan is - that the fractures trump the scan. So now I am on Boniva and recently stopped the Femara because of the osteoporosis.

I haveborderline osteoporsis. I take Calcium+Vit D, Magnesium and a nose spray all in an effort to keep my bones strong. So far, so good I guess.

ruffy - hey! It is good to "see you" and it seems a long time since us Feb '11 gals! I am doing well, having surgery on 5/17 - hopefully the last recon - lost my left implant about 18 months ago after a repair surgery, so finally had a new TE and will now exchange on the left and downsize the implant on the right. Other than that, just about at five years on AI drugs - had a BCI test, which showed high recurrence risk but low drug benefit - MO wants me to stay on Femara if I can tolerate it, so I will, but I think we will re-visit that decision annually from this point on. Are you doing ok, besides the osteo issues?
