Second guessing myself!

Here is the scenario. Multi Focal DCIS, Grade 2, 52 years old, ER+/PR+, central necrosis. I am scheduled for Lumpectomy, 6.5 weeks radiation, Tamoxofin on May 11th.

Now I am second guessing myself. If I do the mastectomy I wonder if I could skip the Tamoxifin?

Lordy…. What's a girl to do?

Maybe, maybe not. They usually (not always)put hormone+ DCIS patients on endocrine therapy regardless of extent of surgery. You could skip the rads, though, if you get a mastectomy--unless they found node involvement or invasive cancer after biopsying the removed breast.

IMO Although there are no guareentees you would be much safer not taken an anti hormone if you had a BMX. You could also skip radiation. That being said its a major operation and once they are gone they are gone. Very difficult decision. Take all the time you need. You have that luxury with DCIS. Good luck and keep us posted...

I agree with the others. Take your time with this decision. The thing about a lumpectomy is that you will be able to keep at least some portion, if not most of your breast. If they take out the lump and don't get clear margins around the edges, they can go back in an take out a little more and still leave you with pretty much the same amount of breast. Once you go with the mastectomy, there is no turning back. You can't put them back on. Reconstruction isn't the same as a boob job. It doesn't look the same and it doesn't feel the same. in fact, your whole chest will feel numb, possibly forever. This can really intimacy. You have to ask yourself if you really feel comfortable having such a radical surgery for a non-invasive cancer.

Please don't rush into this decision.
