Has anyone ever had the Y90 done on there liver? CT scan back in Oct showed 2 low density images,on my liver so my Dr recommended that I have the Y90 to get the little boogers out of there there is a spot on the right and a spot on the left I had the procedure done on the right 3 weeks ago the only thing is it completely wiped out.my energy so between chemo weekly and the last procedure I am totally exhausted ,I always have a lot of energy so I find myself getting depressed and crying more.and I still have to have the left side done yet I have lost 20lbs just from anxiety alone this year and then after this procedure have lost another ten because the first 4 days all I did was sleep so I am getting upset about my weight lose it is hard to put weight back on but some days the appetite is not there some days it is.I even make smoothies with weight gain powder to help .just tired of being tired still working full time also .but think it is time to go part time thanks for listening

I had the Y90 procedure in December. It completely wiped me out! The recovery was much harder than I expected but the results have been worth it. I had 2 liver tumors and it completely wiped out one of them and the other has shrunken. They radiologist said I could do it again later if I needed to. I am not sure I could handle doing the procedure a second time. Going part-time sounds like a good idea if you can do it.

I am sorry to hear you are so tired, and was wondering (as an aside) whether you might be aware that mbc patients can usually qualify to receive Social Security Disability (SSDI). There's a 5 month waiting period after one is approved until one receives the first check, and of course the amount may be less than you are earning. But it may be worth looking into. And 2 years after acceptance, patients can go on Medicare.

    Hoping you feel better soon!

Patti-I lost about 13 pounds and I have still not gained it back. It took me 6 to 8 weeks to start getting my energy back and my appetite is not the same. I only had to do the procedure once so far. I have scans tomorrow and will see how my liver and the last tumor is doing. Hopefully there is no progression. I hate to hear about your anxiety. Have you asked your doctor for some medication to help with that? It is a lot to deal with and can really be overwhelming.

I hope you are starting to feel better. Take time to rest and take care of yourself.

I just saw my oc yesterday in there was more progression by a few liver tumors while on 2 cycles of Taxol. We discussed Y90 & he told me it wasn't approved by breast cancer & I would receive a bill for $100,000 & more importantly the procedure wasn't successful for BC. They may take out the cancer tumors in the liver but the other med tumors would grow faster & be difficult to control. I admit I don't understand the mechanics behind that. Its seems chemo would handle the other cancers. I would appreciate all of you chiming in on what you know. His plan is to have me approved for xeloda which has a large patient co pay in itself & to see if there is a phase I study for me. I didn't see any Studies that would fit in the Charlotte area. Please help.  April

sharethehope-I do remember my oncologist saying that if the cancer had spread to other areas besides the liver that the Y90 was usually not recommended for treatment as it would only treat the liver tumors. Since that is the case with you I am wondering if that is the reason your insurance will not cover it. Do you know the exact reason why your insurance denied the Y90? I would contact your insurance company directly and file an appeal right away. The procedure itself is not too difficult but the recovery is.

Radioembolization(Y90) is a minimally invasive procedure that combines embolization and radiation therapy to treat liver cancer. Tiny glass or resin beads filled with the radioactive isotope yttrium Y-90 are placed inside the blood vessels that feed a tumor. This blocks the supply of blood to the cancer cells and delivers a high dose of radiation to the tumor while sparing normal tissue.

Some information from this article: http://www.rsna.org/NewsDetail.aspx?id=13043 At Northwestern, patients come in for care very late in the disease, often when they have no other treatment options. While metastatic disease in colon cancer patients is often confined to the liver, breast cancer patients present a "unique challenge," Dr. Lewandowski said, because the disease spreads so readily to other parts of the body.

"You have to make sure it makes sense to use this therapy," Dr. Lewandowski stressed. "It's only going to have an effect on the disease we target, so if people have disease everywhere in the body as well as the liver, it may not make sense to treat them with a liver-directed therapy."

The next step will be to evaluate whether outcomes in this patient population will improve by combining treatments like chemotherapy and radioembolization, Dr. Salem said. "The idea is that we can provide combined—not sequential—treatment," he said. And provide that combined treatment earlier, Dr. Salem added.

Looking at that information above, I would argue that you should have the option to do both the Y90 and chemo. Can you get a second opinion from another MO? I am so sorry you are having to deal with all this additional stress.

I haven't been turned down by insurance only the onc.  He's the one who said Y90 isn't covered for bc patients & I would have to pay for treatment myself. His exact words were "we can go ahead & do it we make a lot of money off this surgery."  He is telling me NO bc patients are covered which is why I'm wondering how some have gotten treatment. I don't know if cancer is anywhere because it doesn't show up. Onc says doesn't matter if shows up its probably there. I have had nodules in bronc but had a biopsy & they were NOT cancer but the result of the chemo I was on. This onc doesn't look at my records. Last week he wanted to but me on a blood thinner which he had already put me on a few months ago. I don't think he even knows I had a biopsy on bronc because he wasn't my onc then. I am looking for another onc but this is the primo clinic in area. I think all the onc from here will hang together on ideas. He also said that having chemo for other cancers after Y90 would be useless because cancer would go wild after surgery. Getting a second opinion but same clinic. Want a 3rd opinion at another facility. Want to contact the company that manufactures the product also. Need experiences from patients who have had treatment & what their cancer situation was. Bolon-hope you can get some answers. I do not know if there is anyone else on this board who has had the Y90 who can tell you their experience. Hopefully you will get some feedback from others. Wishing you all the best!
