Birads 3 probably benign

I'm 36 years old and recently had a mammogram and ultrasound because of pain in my left breast under my armpit. They found cluster calcification and a 6 mm nodule. I was told by the tech that the doctor said it's probably benign and to have aa follow up ultrasound in 3 months and mamogram in 6 months.

The paperwork said it is not a simple cyst and that it is a hydtoechoic nodule.

The weird -probably- should never be in any diagnosis as it causes tons of anxiety!! I can't sleep, can't eat...... Constantly googling and feel sick to my stomach. I had been trying to get pregnant and my gyno said it's still OK to get pregnant because they can do an ultrasound pregnant. Uhh what if something negative shows up in 3 out 6 months while I'm pregnant??!!

I've read the articles and I know the three risk is very small with birads 3. That doesn't make this any easier. Ilook at my one year old son and cry imaging what it would be like if he didn't have me.

Waiting for follow ups is not an option. I've scheduled a consultation with a surgeon. I'm hoping they will agree to biopsy it.

Does anybody know if fibroadenomas are hereditary?? My mom and sister both have had those in the past. Would the doc have been able to tell from the ultrasound and mamogram if it were a fibroadenoma??

I know how awful the waiting can be. I am currently pregnant and I just had two awful weeks of waiting for testing and biopsy results on a birads 4. Mine was also hypoechoic and ended up being a a fibroadenoma. They are fairly common in younger women. I do not know of anyone in my family who had one before me.

It is truly hard to tell for certain by ultrasound or mammo if it is a fibroadenoma, as they are also solid breast tumors and share characteristics of other conditions.

There is nothing wrong with wanting certainty! It is your body and your health. I am glad to hear you are pushing for the answers you deserve. Find a good breast center if you can. Not all doctors are created equally so find one that you feel comfortable with.

Please take care and keep us posted!

thanks for responding. I'm glad yours turned out the way it did!! Hopefully the same is in store for me. I'm not sure how to handle the waiting period. I'm physically sick from the stress and anxiety :( I'm not even really sure if the pain is getting worse where the nodule is or if it's in my head. I'm getting other pains too that coincide with stories I've been reading and I'm not sure if I'm imagining then or if they are real :(

Sorry you have to be here but welcome. You know the odds are on your side but I know you still worry. Fibroadenomas must be biopsied for a diagnosis. Im not sure if they are specifically hereditary more likely a predisposition. Also just want to make sure you will be seeing a breast surgeon vs a general surgeon. Good luck and keep us posted.....

thank you. yes I'm seeing a breast surgeon. Well actually I'm seeing the physician assistant so that the appointment was expedited. The appointment is Thursday and I'm really scared they will not want to biopsy it. Hopefully it's my decision.

Did you end up getting the biopsy? What was the outcome?
