Thoughts on Breast Biopsy Issues

Options

We are now seeing information concerning how uterine cancer can be spread by the type of biopsy being done. The breast biopsy that I had done in 2007 was very similar to the uterine biopsy that spreads cancer. In my lay terms, I had the type using something that grabs a bit of the tumor and just breaks off a piece. My breast surgeon stated that it throws pieces of tissue and could also have been the reason that many women have isolated tumor cells in the sentinel nodes.

Why do doctors continue to use this kind of biopsy?

I believe it has been proven pretty conclusively that core needle biopsies do not spread cancer. I don't see that it is at all reasonable to think that, considering better than 80% of breast biopsies are benign that they would start doing surgical biopsies for every little blip on a mammogram.

I thought the problem that has been in the news with uterine cancer being spread is that they are using morcellation to "pulverize" and remove the uterus during robotic surgeries. That isn't a biopsy, per se.
