'official' nutritional recommendations

I thought this was an interesting article on the influence of personalities and politics on government guidelines on nutrition http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin

I remember Yudkin's book Pure, White and Deadly from the 1970s - it did influence me and many around me but I hadn't known that he went on to be so vilified by academe and the food industry.

So, so true! Im a cardiologist's wife--and he confirmed that of all his patients who attempt in various ways to lose weight, only those on low-carb/high-protein/unrestricted-fat diets achieve loss and maintenance results comparable to bariatric surgery. I've backslid recently due to carb cravings caused by letrozole, but over the years low-carb has been the only way to consistently reduce and control my body-fat mass. From 2013-15, I lost nearly 60 lbs. on it (and it made rehabbing my second knee replacement far easier than my first). I've gained back 35 of it, but when I'm done with my vacation culinary debauches I will go back on it as strictly as I can (ignoring my cravings or filling up on water and greens). It's also the easiest diet to follow if you need to dine out--especially in small towns late at night where your only option is a fast food burger patty and salad, bacon & eggs in a 24/7diner, or string cheese & hard-boiled eggs from the gas station mini-mart. And it's very easy to make it more than palatable if you put in some effort at the grocery store and in the kitchen (and get to know a few chefs in restaurants to which you're loyal). Europe always short-circuits me, though--the breads (and in Italy, pasta) are so terrific!

Very funny - 'culinary debauches' :-). And interesting observations from your husband.

I know those carb temptations oh so well. Sugar and desserts don't do a thing for me thankfully but there are lots of opportunities to buy great organic artisan breads and good quality pasta and I find winter-time (which seems to have dragged on for a long time here in Ireland this year) is a time when it's harder for me to resist them. Spring seems to be finally coming so time for some discipline ...

Ugh... I hate how politics are all over everything. We trust our doctors, only to find out that they are manipulated as well. So discouraging. Just eat natural, and listen to your body. This was a great article. Thank you for posting

I've followed a Paleo diet for over 2 years-low carb, fairly high protein, and no restrictions on the amount of fat (although there are restrictions on the types of fats). I lost over 20 lbs in the first 6 months and have maintained my ideal weight since then. This is the only diet I've ever tried that I am able to stick with. Paleo is less a weightloss diet than a dietary plan for life. Anyway, I also agree low carb is an effective way to lose weight and keep it off and the consumption of processed sugar is extremely unhealthy.

ChiSandy, when you say "low carb," are you referring to low glycemic/low simple carb, or low carbs of any kind (more like Atkins)?
