18 years old and very scared of inflammatory breast cancer

hello everyone,

I am 18 years old and woke to find a small red patch on the side of my breast about the size of a 5pence and didn't think anything of it. However I woke up the next day and it was the size of a 50 pence piece and bright red with small blood vessels visible, and hurt to touch. It already began going down after one day but I have also noticed I have very faint dimpling of the skin however I don't know if that is just how my skin on my breast is as they look like they could just be hair follicles. I have also had a full aching all through the day in my breast. Having googled the symptoms I'm really beginning to freak myself out as I know that some women get this but it's rare if you are not breastfeeding and of course all these symptoms match inflammatory breast cancer!Is this something I should be worried about aged 18? Is there anything that you may think it could be instead?

    hello bflox, it is very unlikely at your age that this is IBC. Breast changes are not unusual. However, to ease your concerns, you should probably go to your doctor to have them take a look. Thinking about you!

    It could be a breast infection even if you are not breastfeeding. I had one while I was nursing my baby but I also had one when I wasn't. I was concerned about IBC too at the time but after a round of antibiotics...no problem. To this day I have no clue why it happened.... Best to check with a dr though.

    IBC is rare and even much rarer at 18. Any type of BC is is very rare at 18.

    There are a multitude of possibilities (a bug bite or skin infection are only 2 possibilities) but only a Dr who actually see you can tell you what is going on - we can't here. See you Dr.

    Also - IBC does NOT always (in the few case it does) present with 'redness/rash' - mine didn't.

    hello all! Thank you for the lovely messages it's made me feel much better. However the one thing that concerned me and made me not believe that is was a breast infection as I have pain behind the breast and inside as opposed to on this skin, plus the skin is smooth but just red and sore to press ? Any ideas what this could be?

Any ideas what this could be? the only reason in my head that I had panicked so much and ruled out a rash or bug bite is because of the aching actually in the breast, and the dimpling to be paired with it? Is it normal to be able to see each hair follicle all over a breast without it being skin dimpling or peau d orange?

    Thank you all so much for being so lovely I think I'm just freaking myself out!

    i do think you are freaking yourself out. I don't have any statistics, but I can confidently say that the chances of this being breast cancer at age 18 are infinitesimally remote. Call your doctor and have her take a look.

    And yes, it is possible to be able to see every hair follicle on your breast. It doesn't mean it's peau d' orange dimpling.

    Pain is usually associated with benign or non-cancer issues than with BC.

    As one who is IBC - I can assure you that (in my case), your 'symptons' do not 'match' at all to what I experienced. Where did you come up with the idea that IBC is rarer for women who are not breast feeding? IBC is rare - period. I have never seen that not breast feeding makes it rare. At 63, I definitely was not breast feeding when DXd.

    There are MANY probabilities/possibilitkes as to what iis going on - any type of BC, at your age, would be incrediably unlikely, especially IBC which is only between 1% - 5% of ALL diagnosed types of BC. Of course, anything is possible so if you are concerned - get to your Dr and do not let "Dr Quack Google" DX you or DX yourself with no real knowledge/education.

    No one here can tell you what is going on - so.ething is BUT only a Dr who actually sees you can DX you! If you are concerned and want to find out what is the issue(s) and get the appropriate TX (treatment) if any is needed -see you DR for a DX (diagnosis) sooner rather than later.

    You've made me feel a lot better.

    What I meant about the breast feeding was that I understand that breast infections are less common amongst women who aren't breast feeding and that is why it made me feel as this wasn't an infection, as I am only 18 and have never breast fed before in my life, and I've been told that breast infections with similar symptoms to mine such as mastitis are mainly linked to breastfeeding

    I'm 18 years old and felt this sharp pain around my breast for the past few days and I'm so worried, and there is this lump at the left side of my breast, my left side breast is bigger than the right and the both breasts brings Out fluids.
