Mammogram this morning

I'm 32. I've had some persistent left sided breast discomfort with intermittent sharp pains localized to one area. My doctor performed a breast exam a couple weeks ago and didn't feel any lumps. He felt that I had some fibrocystic changes and I've been told my entire life that I have fibrocystic breasts. He sent me for a mammo this morning to have a baseline. I haven't gotten the official report but the tech popped out to make sure the radiologist was satisfied with the images and came back and said that he said everything looked good. Should I push for an ultrasound, or be satisfied with a negative mammo?

All I can say is that I have very dense breasts and a mammogram in the absence of ultrasound is useless for me. Even the 3D mammo didn't pick up anything. I have an extensive history of breast cancer in my family. As a result, my OBGYN referred me for both a mammo and ultrasound 6 years ago. I was 35. Insurance wouldn't ok it because I was so young. I was only allowed the mammo. Now, 6 years later, they found LCIS, which was only picked up because of microcalcifications shown on the ultrasound. And get this, they only did the ultrasound because my baseline mammo from 6 years ago was lost in a flood. I'm waiting for MRI results to see if there is anything else. I say, push for the ultrasound if you are concerned.

    Hi awe84,

The waiting after tests, is always the most stressful.

It is always a good idea to ' get to the bottom ' of what is causing your breast pain what ever the cause.

If the reason for it is explained in the report that now follows your test then you can think and act on those findings. The majority of reasons for pain are likely not to be cancer but it pays to be vigilant in my humble opinion.

You are right to be pro active and well done for going to your doctor in the first place. So many people try to ignore changes or pain and sit with their worry when often there is something straight forward to do about it!

If you dont feel satisfied with the feedback you get and the pain continues, I would personally keep investigating and get in touch with a breast cancer centre. At the end of the day you need a resolution to the pain in anycase.

No doubt your results will be explained to you soon. Come back and give us your most likely happy results and good luck with it all.

Glad you poped in to ask your question, this is a great place to get support and it is completly normal to be worried. Just never ignore your health concerns, any new changes and bothersome symptoms with your body need to be looked at. Being pro active like you are will keep you ' on top of ' what ever going on and in the best place to act to help yourself what ever the issue.

    You take care of you!

Will send you 'calming during the wait vibes'. If that does not work, ice cream is another option.

    Hug.

    Shiny

Update: So I've been waiting since last Tuesday for my mammo results. I went to my doctor yesterday and he said he still didn't have a final report. I requested an ultrasound. To my surprise, they had a cancellation and I was able to have my sono this morning. I asked the tech if my mammo had been reported and she said it was reported on Monday. She pulled it up on her screen to double check and while I couldn't see it all, I saw the words BIRADS2 and 'normal bilateral breasts'. She said the ultrasound will take a week to be reported. The wait continues!
