I have a young friend (28) who has DCIS. She is getting a bilateral Mastectomy with Reconstruction. She meets with a plastic surgeon soon but is concerned that her age will prevent her from getting a DIEP flap. Has anyone is this age group had one?

I met with several plastic surgeons (three in Phoenix, one in NOLA, and one at UCLA) who all said they performed DIEP reconstruction (one of the surgeons in Phoenix actually did muscle-sparing free TRAMs and not DIEP, he didn't think I knew the difference and he was wrong, I do my research).

Although I was a bit older than 28 when my bilateral DIEP was done, none of the surgeons I met with ever mentioned young-age being a barrier. In fact, it was just the opposite. DIEP would only need to be done once (plus revisions if desired) versus having implants changed out every "ten-ish" years. I remember things like prior abdominal surgeries, smoking, or low body fat (ask for prescription strength ice cream or cheesecake) being barriers to DIEP.

BTW, I love my DIEP girls, they are warm and smooshy and just the right amount of jiggly 😜 Not to be a name dropper, but, he is my best-doctor-ever-plastic surgeon, Christopher Crisera at UCLA.
