Was anyone's tumor grade different after final pathology?

Hi..As I await my upcoming mastectomy, I was just wondering if anyone got a different tumor grade when their final pathology came in? I know the staging is done then, but does the grade that was given at the time of biopsy always turn out to be correct?

I think most are the same but mine was different. My initial path report was Grade 1 but the final path report said Grade 2. I asked my surgeon about this and she said the initial path uses a very small tissue sample so the final report (with more tissue analyzed) is more accurate. Also, tumor grade is an opinion of the pathologist - granted they have some fairly consistent criteria they use for grading but still..................

    Nope.

My experience was similar to Sunnyone. The biopsy report said that my tumor was Grade 2. But the surgical pathology report said it was Grade 3.

The pathology report from a pre-surgery biopsy is always based on a smaller sample. So it is always subject to revision based on more information (tissue). While both of us (the first two responding posters) had changes to a "higher" grade, there isn't any reason that the change couldn't go the other way as well.

Nothing about my initial biopsy stayed the same. I had a lot more cancer, of a more advanced type, than the biopsy had shown.

Mine was grade 2 from the core needle biopsy and grade 1 after surgery so it can be downgraded too. I hope your surgery goes well

    Lekker,

I'm curious about what the circumstances were that led to your getting a double MX after your lumpectomy. Since your tumor grade was downgraded from 2 to 1 on final path report, would you be willing to share with us why you followed up with the second surgery? Was it your age? Your previous cancer?

    Curious........................

Mine went from a grade 2 on biopsy to grade 3 surgical. I was told the same thing re: grade is subjective.
