Abnormal Mammogram, family history
Comments
-
I get a mammogram and MRI done yearly due to a strong family history of breast cancer. My mother died in 2006 at the age of 53 from breast cancer.
I was called last week to and told my mammogram results came back and were "abnormal", my doctor told me she would make necessary referrals. I am beyond scared at this point. I have two young children and am terrified. I found out this week that I was being referred to a general surgeon (and told there may be a wait to get in), I find it strange that there is no referral for more diagnostic testing such as an ultrasound??? And have yet to be called to book my yearly MRI.
Is this the normal route after an abnormal mammogram result? Last year I had an unclear MRI and was sent immediately for an ultrasound which came back stating it was normal breast tissue, and ordered to come back in for a follow up MRI in September which came back clear.
Sorry I feel like I am rambling just wanted to hear from people who have gone through the same thing. I will of course be calling my family doctor on Monday to ask questions.

i would strongly suggest that you see a breast surgeon who is well versed in breast cancer. They may want to get an MRI or ultrasound. They may go straight to biopsy. You won't know what your abnormal results mean until you get the biopsy results. If you have your mammo results, perhaps you can post them so we can help you figure some of this out.
Best of luck to you. You're in that awful place between mmammo findings and treatment plan. Most of us feel a sense of relief once we know what's going to happen, even if it's not the news you were hoping for.

seems odd to me... It seems they would do a biopsy... Also, if they think a surgeon is so important... Forget the waiting...
Get on the horn/ internet. find the one YOU want, That takes your insurance and can get u in. Get the appointment set up - then call your doc with the surgeons fax number and have them fax the referral. I wouldn't go with "who they'll send you too" Find out who you want to go to. There's not much you can do right now, but that much is in your control... And a wait for an appointment is not acceptable , especially when your worried
Good luck

Perhaps the surgeon will order ultrasound and possible biopsy. I suggest going to a Breast surgeon if possible, I think hat it is better to be seen by someone who specializes in the Breast. I have heard many different ways the BC is diagnosed. Some people have ultrasounds and MRIs, I never had an MRI. I was lucky in that I was asked to come in for a follow up mammo after my regular annual mammo. They did ultrasound same day, and while I was there, did the biopsy too. Some women wait weeks between these appointments. I'm sure that your regular doc will clear things up for you
Good luck, and please let us know how everything turns out.

Lisa...to start I urge you to see a breast surgeon at a major university hospital rather than a general surgeon. Also it sounds like you are young. Young women usually have dense breasts and thus mammos are not that reliable. IMO you need an ultrasound and breast MRI. Try not to worry about the mammo result. Abnormal could be many things other than cancer. Remember they have to prove you have bc before you actually have it! Good luck and keep us posted....

Breast surgeons ARE general surgeons, specializing in breasts. She may very well already have been referred to a breast specialist.
I have a friend who is Harvard educated, did her residency at MSK and has never done anything but breasts. She is categorized as a general surgeon
