What is a "Boost" when dealing with rads?

My mother will start radiation shortly (she just finished her chemo) and I keep seeing a reference to "Boosts". What is a boost?
We are in Canada if that makes a difference?

A Boost is extra treatment concentrated at the tumor bed. It's given after the normal course of radiation. Not sure how things are in Canada.
