Sexual Side Effects
Ok, ladies... for those who have had hormonal therapy or are currently having it, is there anyone who HASN'T had any sexual side effects? My husband and I are very sexually active and many stories on here portray a very grim outlook in regards to vaginal atrophy, low libido, difficulty with orgasms, etc... So, please, let me hear from you. If you've had little to no side effects, what medication are you on?

Owens69, it looks like the the answer to your question is No. Less estrogen, for any reason including menopause, will cause the problems you name. I've been on an AI for a year tomorrow and this is what I've learned to deal with it: First, talk to your oncologist about using Vagifem periodically. I do twice a week. I know it seems counterintuitive, but having periodic blasts of estrogen helps vaginal tissue maintenance without giving ER sensitive cancer cells the constant source they need to survive. Second, use vitamin e suppositories. This recommendation came from my ob/gyn.

(Blush) Me...I have always had a high drive and it has gone up since I started Tamoxifen....... much to my hubby's delight! I guess I really am anomaly. I have none of the atrophy, dryness or problems with achieving orgasm - I have so few SE's all the way around I wonder if the bloody stuff is even working.

Lucky girl Englishmummy! Tamoxifen acts like estrogen in some respects including stimulating the lining of the uterus and strengthening bones. A lot of women taking tamoxifen are perimenopausal which is when a lot of women would start having problems anyway, and some are going through chemopause, so it isn't always clear what is causing what. Unfortunately for us post menopausal women, an aromatase inhibitor just flat out cuts your estrogen down. I looked up the studies when I started taking it. At natural menopause, women's estrogen levels are cut approximately in half when the ovaries stop producing estrogen. Aromatase inhibitors prevent aromatase, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, from being transformed ultimately into estrogen. Since this pathway is the primary source of estrogen for post menopausal women, this cuts the level of estrogen in half again. It's particularly brutal for anyone using estrogen replacement before Dx.

Per my OC, Tamoxifen is less likely to have sexual side effects especially in regards to affecting the libido since it does not make an estrogen blockade.
I've not had problems with sexual desire or achieving orgasm on Tamoxifen, but it does seem to change the ph of my vagina. I've had yeast infections since starting it and joke that the inside of my vagina has been scraped out and filled with sand. Using plenty of lube helps during intercourse, but I feel sore afterwards and it takes a few days before I'm willing/able to do it again.
My experience is Tamoxifen is not great for my sex life, but not horrible either. As in it's still possible and enjoyable.
The first poster asked about hormone therapy in general. If you have a choice between Tamoxifen and AI treatment talk to your OC about just how important your sex life is to you and ask him/her which drug patients report fewer problems with in this dept. Knowing might help you to make a choice that is doable for you.
