Hello All, this is my first post. I am scheduled for a mammogram and ultrasound on monday. I am a 33 y old nale. The general practicioner found a lump under my left nipple, and painful cysts near that. No swollen lymoh nodes. She said that it could be benign and that I shouldn't assume anything. But it's hard. I am feeling trapped and scared and just want this to go away. It feels like a positive diagnosis would be the end of my world. I don't know what to do, or how to calm down. All the statistics that males have lower chance of bc have still not helped. I am so scared. I have not been able to sleep. I don't know if there is any hope or not.

Dear Seth, welcome to Breastcancer.org. Sorry you had to be here and worried, but glad to see that you found our amazing community!

We know it's scary and not easy to keep your mind away from thinking about it but yes, as your doctor said, those symptoms may also be signs of a benign breast condition. Anyway, any change in your breast should be investigated, never mind if you're a man or a woman. Are you going to do further testing?

Please stay connected here. We're sure others should be along soon to offer some advice and support and personal experiences to you.

Let us know how you're doing!

Thanks for the reply. I have read quite a bit since yesterday when the doctor found the lump. The troublesome part is that several benign conditions are listed for women. Not so many for men. It seems that once a lump is found in men, it is probably cancer. I talked to a few people who Research cancer and they said that it could be as harmless as fat deposits. I am trying and failing to stay positive. I am scheduled for a mammogram with possible ultrasound on monday. Based on the results, the doctor will decide the next step.

Hang in there, Seth. I have an older friend with both breast and prostate cancer, and he is doing fine. And it could be fat deposits or something else benign! Thinking good thoughts for you.

Edited to add: You could touch base with Traveltext he is very active on the boards here. Nice guy and very helpful.

Thanks Glennie19. Appreciate your encouragement. People around me are being extremely supportive, especially my wife. It is so important to know that I am not alone. I have been told that in many cases, even if I have bc, treatment options are available. of course, I read about options before, but my perspective has changed in the last 24 hours. I still would like to believe that it's only fat deposits and not bc.

    Dear All,

The mammogram came back normal. There is some fat deposition. The doctor thinks it might very well be the side effect of a drug I have been on for the past 6 months. My entire family reacts badly to that drug with every "rare" side effect. But I am relieved. I have been asked to follow up in 3 months to follow that area closely.

Thank you for all the support. This site is wonderful. I am going to try to become involved with the local chapter of the breast cancer awareness group here and volunteer as much as I can.

I know it is difficult/impossible to not think about it, Tallygurl1973. But Most lumps are not bc. Stay positive. And remember, you are not alone. Whatever the outcome of the tests (hoping it is all normal), you have a lot of support from people here. Do keep us posted.
