10 years cancer-free

Hi. I just saw my oncologist, and have now reached the 10 year mark. In 2006, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 ILC at age 41. I had a double mastectomy, chemo, and an oophorectomy. I took Arimidex for almost five years.

I have had some scares over the years, but each time the results were OK. I know the recurrence risk never drops to zero, but I do feel some comfort in the 10 year mark. Back in 2006, I didn't think I would make it this far.

I feel healthy, but will admit that hitting menopause ten years ahead of schedule has had its issues. I suspect that bone density problems are in my future sooner than they would have been without the cancer diagnosis.

These boards were my lifeline back then, and my medical information is surely too out of date to help anyone. But I hope that this post offers something positive to someone.

    You are welcome :) I am going to try to post once in a while, and I am going to look at the board that deals with bone density. I just recently found out that eating prunes can help - I wish I would have known that sooner.

    Mostly, I just want to wish everyone all the best. My youngest child was only in preschool when I was diagnosed. It was terrifying. And now he is in high school!

    Every year, I keep hoping "they" are closer to a cure so we don't have to think about this!
