    Very interesting findings.

News about this TMEM (tumor microenvironment of metastasis) research was released Fall 2014.
Albert Einstein University in New York City has been researching this for a few years (here's a June 2014 PR called: "New Test Predicts If Breast Cancer Will Spread").
I also wrote about it here. It looks like this latest research further elucidates the mechanics of TMEM.

A tiny company called Metastat in Boston Massachusetts has been trying to commercialize a diagnostic test (was called 'MetaSite Breast', now called 'MenaCalc') to exploit this research. Essentially, they are developing an assay that determines the likelihood of metastasis. Initially, it was geared towards ER+, HER2- early stage breast cancer patients, but now appears to cover all early stage disease.

They are taking a very different approach compared to the common gene signature tests such as Oncotype, MammaPrint, and Prosigna.

It's certainly interesting, but probably needs to be validated with clinical trials, so perhaps years from being clinically available.

I'm not sure how I missed this news from last month. It's from the Blog of Dr. Francis Collins, the Director of the NIH.
It's a video that explains how breast cancer cells leave the primary tumor to metastasize through a doorway in the blood vessel.
This deals with the original link cp418 posted last August.

Great video! More details than another video previously linked in this forum.

A protein called Mena-Inv seems to be the culprit.

I just watched the video about blood vessel 'doorways'. Unbelievable! This insidious invader actually acts in a targeted, evil way! Fascinating and downright fearful. When I look at the one-size-fits-all systemic treatments being offered to us to prevent metastasis, I realize how we're shooting a garden hose at a terrorist.

John, thank you so much for this link and for all the links you provide. Those of us with ILC's have a unique opportunity to educate MO's. Remember, MO's handle many, many different types of cancers in many organs. No doubt we spend more time reading up on ILC than they do.
