I was just diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ on one breast. The area is too large for a lumpectomy and it is considered to be a grade 3 aggressive cancer. They want to do a simple mastectomy. But I want more information to see if I am at risk for developing it on the other breast which is clear on the mammogram. I am going to get a second opinion.

I'm sorry you find yourself here

Bilateral cancer is pretty rare, as is developing a new cancer on the contralateral side. You would be much more likely to recur on your cancer side

While Melissa is right, it was recommended I have a double mastectomy because of the density of my breasts. I had my surgery two weeks ago and DCIS was found in my other breast as well. I am thankful I made the decision I did.  The choice is a very personal one. I was never very attached to my breasts and breast cancer runs in my family so I always said I wouldn't think twice about getting rid of them, and I didn't. For some women, it is very emotional. I wish you all the best in your journey and with whatever you decide. The women here are wonderful and there is a wealth of information on this site.  HUGS!

And while Melissa is right, an MRI after DCIS was diagnosed showed that I had DCIS and IDC on the other side, but undetectable by mammogram. It was a worse cancer than the one that could be seen on the first side. I'd encourage you to get not only a second opinion, but more extensive imaging.

I had lumpectomy. One pathologist says adh but borderline Yale says dcis grade 1 with necrosis. First oncologist says radiation because of my age, 46. Margin is 1 mm. Getting second opinion. What to do??

Hi bradford37, your diagnosis is completely treatable so don't be scared. You will be fine with the surgery, it is a very quick operation.

I was diagnosed with microscopic DCIS in September 2016 in my right breast. I chose a bi-lateral mastectomy because breast cancer runs on both sides of my family. Plus, it is easier to make two reconstructed breasts than to try and match one. In December I had my DIEP reconstruction. I am very happy.
