Winter 2015-16 RADS

Thank you is spades to whomever mentioned weeks ago that our clothing, stained by Aquaphor and other topical creams, can be completely cleaned by soaking in a tub of hot sudsy dish detergent water. I chose not to wear mens t-shirts due to their bulk and my preference for soft, loose, feminine undergarments. I have several $20-25 polyester/rayon tanks and camisoles that I sacrificed for the sake of comfort and coverage during radiation that I assumed would be thrown out after treatment. I soaked them in a tub of Dawn dish detergent and hot water for several hours today and washed with a load of towels. They are now spotless, soft again and look like new!
This forum has been an invaluable resource, full of a vast variety of tips for daily living that should be provided routinely by our treatment centers!
It's the little things in life that can make all the difference. I'm now considering what I can do with the money I would have spent on replacing my undergarments...LOL
KateB79 So happy to hear how well you are doing and such perfect timing coinciding with the beginning of Spring, renewal and awakening!
-
Twinltoz, congrats on the party!!!!
To everyone out here... I'm 19 days post rads and with the exception of my SEs from Tamoxifen, my rads healing is great!!! No peeling, no redness, just the scar... keep using your creams and lotions ladies....
-
Thanks Jersey Girl. I plan to be where you are and am hoping for similarly successful SE outcome in about 5 weeks. Good to hear a success story!
-
I will add that I believe my high protein diet and use of Miaderm has helped tremendously through these radiation treatments. I have very minimal side effects so far, with 6 whole-breast treatments and 5 boosts left to do. Fatigue has not been an issue.
I do want to mention that it is a myth that high protein will damage kidneys in healthy people. It only applies to people who do not have healthy kidneys to begin with. Even a very high protein diet has not been shown to damage healthy kidneys. It does make them work harder, however.
About 25% of my daily calories come from protein, which translates to anywhere from 110-135 grams of protein for me. Not only is it vital for healing, but it also helps us maintain muscle or lose it much more slowly (the anabolic effect Kate spoke of). Most women tend to eat too little protein. My protein comes from greek yogurt, chicken, eggs, fish, a little beef, lentils & beans, etc. If I add protein powder to my smoothies, it is egg protein.

barbe1958 - you are in my prayers as you battle your recurrence. I certainly never intended to offend you or anyone by using the word 'cured' in my previous post. I put the word in italics but in hindsight, it would have been more grammatically correct to put it in parentheses. My intent was to indicate "cured" in a relative sense.
Interestingly, my BS was the one who first used that word with me. Her exact statement was "a vast majority of women with similar breast cancer to yours go on to be cured". Of course, I knew what she meant. I hope you know I mean no disrespect.
Please know that everyone here, especially me, wishes you strength, hope and health as you face your challenge.
-
Seeing many of you finish rad treatment, and are seeing some good skin healing, is keeping me afloat. Between the rads and the hot flashes, I feel like an overdone turkey. Extra crispy. Setting off Geiger counters everywhere and I think the Navy wants me to power one of their nuclear submarines...
-
Moondust Although research on high protein diets, in healthy adults with healthy kidneys, has not shown a relationship to kidney damage, I do not believe breast cancer patients currently fall under the category of healthy adults. Those of us who have had various treatments, chemotherapy etc. may have compromised kidneys. I still believe a discussion with one's physician, oncology nurse or dietician is warranted if one is to make any dietary changes, including to a high protein diet, during treatment.

Thanks Birdysmom! My exact sentiments. Thinking radiation blasts have sent my MIA cancer cells scurrying to all places unknown (within).
-
Birdysmom, you crack me up in the very best way. Thank you!
-
Hi All Keep pushing thorough. Great advise above. DeDil I too found my self tightly gripping the handles and tensing my legs through the whole process. Im glad you are able to relax. Thanks for the washing advise. I have been pouring boiling water down my bathroom sink to get rid of the aquafor which is clinging to the sides. Also the RO said to massage the cream in. Massage is good to decrease fuild which will decrease pain. TWNKLE Fantasitic I hope you had a great time. After my last day we went out to my favorite coffee house. It feels strange not to have to go to rads in the am. Will be thinking of you. MARY GO INDIANA they blew Kentucky away.

I finished by 16 treatments of radiation on March 10th! Woo Woo! Ten days later I'm dragging. It's much worse than when I was in treatment. I can do some things, things that don't require a lot of energy, like type, read, and watch television. Some days I can grocery shop, some days not. I've needed to do laundry for days and just can't get up the energy to do it. I'm sleeping a lot, 9,10 even 11 hours a night but it doesn't seem to make much difference. How long will this last? I know everyone's different but this is such a drag! I want to feel better.
-
neen56 it's funny my ro told me on my last day the fatigue would get worse before it got better..and I think he said may last a few weeks. I took off Saturday and Sunday thinking I'd get some cleaning done but no like you I can barely watch TV..I have slept most of today away.
I'm going to try to up my protein with my nutribullet making soups and drinks.
Good luck to everyone this week. Be gentle and rest if you need it
-
Friday put me halfway through--17 out of 33. The fatigue just keeps getting worse. I have slept so much, and when I am up I am dreaming about going back to bed. I would give up and ride this out unconscience if I didn't have a birthday party next weekend--my oldest is turning 11. I really tried to get him to go out with a few friends and do an activity (daddy chaparoning)--trampoline park, lasertag, movie, etc.--but no! He wants the usual big party with all his grandparents too. Seriously?! What young boy turns down play time with friends to make sure he can see his grandparents?! Gosh, I love him! But I am going out of mind trying to figure out how to clean house, get a cookie cake, have some sort of activity to corral all those bodies... My husband keeps reassuring me he has this--but I know better! At least he is trying. Gosh, I love him!
Pain has kicked in too. Tightness in the skin, but tenderness in the lumpectomy area too. I have that red/brown box on my chest and it burns, and DH commented on the heat tonight, but its the pain/tightness I need to deal with. All of the incisions are angry and protesting. No peeling or chaffing, yet.
Someone said earlier rads is hard because you think of cancer everyday. It's true. I thought this would go by much quicker because it would be a busy time of treatment. These 33 days are dragging by. It seems like I have been walking that long hallway for years now. 16 left. -
DiDel, I have just starting nutribulleting about a month ago . I am just doing it in the mornings right now good idea to up the protein I will start rads hopefully in the next week or so. I love the green shakes my DH doesn't, I sneak a few in his so far so good he hasn't caught on
-
I finished my first week 5 doses weekend off. I have 5 more weeks to go. I keep thinking that something is bothering me. Worried about a headache that comes and goes not too tired.
-
Birdysmom I love the picture. I do feel like an overdone turkey.
I am starting to brown up. My nipple is so red and hurts. I put Udderly Smooth (great name) on and it helps a little.
I finished 9 of 21 treatments. Today one of the ladies I talk to finished. It felt good to see someone done and know this will be done for me to soon. No ringing of a bell, just her happy face.
-
Had my first session today and as we walked into the cancer centre my husband got a text to say he was laid off work! Talk about stress!!!! Well, at least he's available to drive me to and fro.....LOL. I have an hour and a half there, then an hour back to work and after work the other half hour home. A lot of highway driving in one day. My hospital is in Windsor, just across the river from Detroit, so if anyone is having rads in Detroit, wave! I'm the one wearing the "modesty gown".....

I started my rads today. I am going to guess it gets worse before it gets better.
-
Welcome Welcome Kkubsky - so sorry you are here but so glad you found our awesome group! Hope #1 went well for you today and the rest go smooth and easy! How many treatments are you having?
Mary
-
Welcome Kkubsky, this is a great group to ask questions and get information.
-
Kkubsky, you and me are on the same track!!!! We can do this together....right? I'm only getting 25 sessions but two areas during each. One machine does my chest wall and lower neck and another does my axillae nodes.
They used the bolus, too, and I asked why and they said it's to keep the rays closer to the skin level - I'm dead flat with no flesh to absorb some of the excess. She said it will make me burn worse but it might save my heart and lung.
-
Had a lot of fun at my party. SO MUCH FOOD!
Two weeks out now and I see/feel improvement every day. Still peeling, and I'm mostly brown instead of pink.
-
Back to rads, 7 to go. RO said use Aquafor now, no more zinc (Weleda) the metal in it might slow the "rays". Got my Ativan to carry me through.
-
Kkubsky - wishing you minimal SE's during your treatment. This is a good place to be to discover how others managed their way through this journey.
Today was #5 of 28 for me. Two more treatments and I get my first glass of champagne!
Mary, I'm an IU alumnae and am pulling for them too! Hope they help your bracket picks.
Question for those who are done or nearly so: When did you start using Aquaphor? From the start or only after redness/burning started? Did you use it after using other creams? I use Miaderm cream 3X a day right now. Third application is before bed. Should I put Aquaphor on top of it before going to bed? I have no burning yet.
Thanks!
Sunnyone
-
Getting 16 treatments with 2 boosts. Today was longer than the rest will be. A lot of positioning etc. I am having the rads in a prone position. I keep asking them to give me a massage while I am laying there....lol.
-
My RO said today we will probably take a break after the 28 days. She said my skin is really red and she thinks we should wait a week or so before doing the boosts. She also told me to take a B complex vitamin for the fatigue and is ordering a steroid cream for the redness.
-
Sunnyone, I think the lotion you should use depends on your individual skin. My skin does not seem to do well with any kind of vaseline-based product, which Aquaphor is. But a lot of people swear by it. I'm using just the Miaderm. My RO told me today that it is almost impossible to predict how someone's skin will react to rads. Many light-skinned people or redheads, who would burn in the sun, do just fine with the rads, and he's also had a few dark-skinned patients with severe reactions.
Musogirl, I'm glad you will get a break. I hope it helps with the fatigue, and hope the B vitamins also help.
Barbe, you will get through this! I only have one zapper machine, but it moves around from my left side to my right and zaps me from two different angles.
Kkubsky, the first real session seemed to be the longest. I get extra xrays once a week, too, and that takes a few extra minutes.
Today I asked my RO about Vitamin D. He considers it a weak antioxidant and said it is fine to take. He also recommended taking it with calcium.
Five WB (whole breast) to go and five boosts.
-
Mary, I am an IU gal too. Let's all meet at the final 4!
I'm 25 days post radiation now. Yesterday, I ditched the white t-shirt. My skin is so much better now. I've kept up the special care cream am pleased with healing.
Hang in there ladies. We've got this!
I might see you again in a Hair, tamoxifen, or reconstruction thread
-
Treatment #17 our of #33 (including boosts), so I just passed the half-way point and no SEs, other than a very, very faint pink rectangle. On the days without RO meeting or X-rays I'm in an out in time to catch the 7:44 am commuter train into the city and get my exercise from the 1.8 mile walk from the station to the office (although I work from home 2 days/week, as I had been doing previously).
